Iran preparing to execute British citizen, say family - BBC News

The family of Alireza Akbari, a British-Iranian dual national sentenced to death in Iran, have said authorities are preparing to execute him.

Mr Akbari, an ex-deputy Iranian defence minister, was arrested in 2019 and convicted of spying for the UK.

He has denied these claims, and said he was tortured and forced to confess on camera to crimes he did not commit.

The UK has urged Iran to halt the planned execution and immediately release Mr Akbari, however Iran's government does not recognise dual nationality for Iranians.

Whether British citizens or not - these executions are worthless and won't do any good in term for calming the situation - Iranians will just have more reason to disagree with the dictatorship regime. The USA and UK are learning there is a price to pay for imposing sanctions on countries which in itself is a cruel way of inflicting hardship and even death on innocent people. You cannot "escape" to a country imposing sanctions on your country of birth and expect to reside in both free!

Why would any country install a dual-national in such a sensitive office as Deputy Defence Minister? Especially a person who holds a British Passport. This is a massive conflict of interest for any nation, nevermind a nation like Iran! The Iranians likely thought he would be spying for them and holding a British Passport, would have visa free and unrestricted access to the UK, he would also have held an Iranian Diplomatic Passport too. It makes no sense.
