Great tip with cotton balls. For live venues I prefer longer sustain so usually tune reso heads much higher than batter. Kick drum I do same tension on reso and batter with just a felt strip to dampen the reso, I also prefer no port hole which annoys most sound guys. Snare I do lower reso tension, and much higher batter tension to get nice crack with short sustain.
