American Akita vs Japanese Akita - Complete Breed Comparison

Due to the similarity of names and traits, Akitas and Akita Inus are typically mistaken for the same breed. They are, however, two separate breeds. In the US, it's referred to as the American Akita. The Akita inu is the Japanese Akita.

Akita Inus, on the other hand, are only available in brindle, white, and red coloration. Both Akitas, like many Spitz breeds, have an independent streak. As a result, they have earned a reputation for being stubborn and wilful, making them challenging to train.

Typically strangers to the dogs often note they are stand-offish and unfriendly. The best way to counter these accusations is to thoroughly socialize the Akitas and ensure they attend obedience classes.

Similar to the Akita Inu, the American Akita has a hunting background and, as such, has a high prey drive, which means they can be dangerous around smaller pets. Both breeds can also be aggressive towards other dogs, especially ones of the same sex. Once again, thorough socialization is necessary.

In contrast to the Akita Inu, the American Akita is not as wary of outsiders if the strangers are welcome guests.

American Akita Vs. Japanese Akita Exercise Needs

In order to remain happy and healthy, both Akita types require daily activity in moderation.

There isn't a big enough difference between the breeds to be significant.

However, remember they are both large dogs and, as such, should be exercised with care when they are young, or you run the risk of injuring and stressing their joints and bones. Hip dysplasia is more common in large-breed dogs, according to several studies. While pups are still growing, over-exerting them might exacerbate this issue.
