How long can I keep my hand in mealworms?

One of the most commonly asked questions on my mealworm videos is whether these little creatures would actually try to bite and eat a human being. While I can't lie in a tub full of mealworms for a few days for obvious reasons, I did just enough to test if they'd bite.

Now, the video might seem more morbid and bizarre than it really is, although I'm not trying to downplay the risks involved with this project. I used my hand as bait but didn't let them actually eat it. I only gave them my palm, which has thicker skin. They only managed to mark the upper layer, but it was enough to see their intentions.

Safety is my number one priority, and I discourage anyone from trying this. Mealworms are generally safe to touch unless they were fed something you wouldn't normally touch. However, keeping your hand in them poses new risks that you shouldn't take. I did it for the video, but otherwise it would be unnecessary.

I paid close attention to what these mealworms were fed and ensured they were kept in a clean environment throughout their lives. They were specifically raised for this project to minimize pathogens and bacterial contamination.

Keeping mealworms can be fun, but always keep the risks in mind.

Mealworms have an ability to digest certain types of plastic, like polystyrene (commonly known as Styrofoam). This was so cool! Especially when the worms had enough bite strength to support their own weight, plus checking out the texture of your hand after the fact.
