Mitsubishi L200 pickup review - Carbuyer

“The fifth-generation Mitsubishi L200 is the best yet – good enough to demand a place on any pickup buyer’s shortlist.”

On sale for more than three decades, the Mitsubishi L200 is one of Britain's most popular pickup trucks. That's because it's a very reliable and tough workhorse. Plus, by offering the same kind of equipment as you’d find in a conventional car, it becomes a desirable piece of kit.

Part of the appeal of these plush pickups used to be some very favourable tax conditions. Today, they’re not quite as cheap to run, but this latest version of the Mitsubishi L200 follows a well-trodden path.

My family friend has this car. Year 2015 but previous model 2, 4Td, (100kw), manual .I itself have a cheap old car, but I am car enthusiast and I´ve driven so many cars. Expensive cars, cheap cars, sports, sedans, coupes, 4x4 off road, custom, hot rod cars and so on. Many different brands.  I have to mention that the Mitsubishi L200 2015 as well as the previous model and certainly  the last also, are one of the best 4x4 cars at all ! So their quality, driveability, techniques,   visibility, economy, very comfort seats and so on ! Excellent car, excellent price and excellent buy !

I bought my L200 new in 2014, and it's better now than when it was new. Engine's smoother, doesn't rattle at idle, and the leaf springs have bedded in. Nothing's ever gone wrong apart from a wheel arch that wasn't tightened properly at the factory.

I'm 6'4". What put me off the seating position on the old L200 was that there wasn't a rake adjustment on the wheel which meant taller drivers had to drive with arms out stretched. Also the low box leaver was too close to the knee which meant it was vibrating again your left leg all the time. This would have stopped me from buying one. They have also finally added a 6th gear and improved the mpg which for me now makes this the best pickup on the market. It ain't the prettiest but a chunky set of steel wheels would soon improve its appearance 😉

Just bought a Barbarian 2017 model and first pickup I have ever owned. We love it - and even wifey, who steadily drives it to her work every day, well, she loves it too. All the creature comforts, automatic too, so none of that old skool changing gears (that;s for wimps). I have to agree about the 'infotainment' system though, it is an absolute nightmare, so, I will be changing that very very shortly. Its terrible. Great all round family car and driving sensibly around town, we can hit at least 30mpg.

Let us know what you think of the styling on this one - the chrome is a bit, er, controversial in the Carbuyer office!

Great review guys.. Glad the L200 become better. And i like Mitsubishi also because they had great history in racing ("Dakar Rally" and "World Rally championship"). Mitsubishi are sometimes underrated from people including me before, but from my own experience with my relatives, I had opportunity to drive and also become passanger in the Montero Sport for long journeys and i'm feel comfortable & feels not too tired better than in my honda CR -V and toyota Fortuner(in fortuner sometimes i feel dizzy & queasy, maybe because of the suspensions & body movement). And montero sport's horsepower & torque are great enough for overtaking on the motorway and climbing/ hill roads, & Fun to drive also. But still every car has it's own weakness, test drive personally or with freinds or family.

Let Mat test the Nissan NP300 Navara as well. It's doing very well here in the Far East (against vehicles like the new Hilux and the new Triton).

I had a 2005 then got a 2012 one but I felt the 2005 was more of a truck and just looks better the 2012 just felt badly built but the biggest Dangerous thing about mine was it never liked to stop specially if it was a bit wet I was going to buy a 2019 one but was put off I was going to buy a Ford ranger but I ended up with a 4.2 audi A8 I wish there did a v8 pickup which looks great and the Interior high quality i still like the interior better in the l200 then the ranger just feels good it has that feeling about it

Love watching the video 📹

It's not the most stylish truck but very functional. Depending on your needs, this truck may be better than most other offerings. It's not suppose to be luxurious, it's done well for its mission.

I have the 2007 l200 and love it but I want this one now. Just a shame I can't afford it. I was intimidated by its size at first but now I just drive it like its a small car. Find it easier to be honest. Only thing I'd change is I'd have gone for the single cab just for more room for camping gear.

What I cant understand is, if you're doing a review of a pickup like this, what not include a review on its towing capacity, handling, fuel economy etc when towing. Not everybody buys one of these as a 'Chelsea Tractor', some us actually use them for towing and it would be nice to get a professional review on this as well. It would give a great overall idea of what the pickup is like.
