We recently had the opportunity to spend an afternoon with the one and only Dan Erlewine, a luthier known and respected around the world. Dan welcomed us into his shop in Athens where we found out a little about Dan's history and the passion that he has for his trade and for sharing his knowledge with others. On this video we also check out past and present projects of Dan's and we get to see a slightly different side of this remarkable artist and true gentleman. Enjoy!

Dan I just want to thank you for sharing your lifetime of skills and experience on such a passion that brings us joy on multiple levels! I actually as an amateur luthier but master automotive restorer use some of your techniques with great success restoring wood steering wheels! Now if I could just get them to make music 🎶 😉

Fascinating, instructional and a privilege to watch. I still have the Guitar Player Repair Guide from years ago by Dan Erlewine, which is my guitar setup bible. Thank you Sir !

Dan I want to tell everyone what stumac pulled on me. Dan we have a lot in common. I started repairing guitars around 1965. Ive made alot of my own tools and jiggs and you name it. I love your show but have one huge problem. I have mostly avoided trendy, fancy specialize tools for the ones I have fabricated myself, with a few obvious exceptions. I was especially interested in the trussrod rescue kits. Many times those slim cutters and dies would have saved me so much time. To make a long miserable story short. I seen your sponsorship Stumac's kit for the gibson 10/32 die and the wood cutter that was slim enough to get in the area and do just enough to get a trussrod nut biting and doing its job solid and fix the problem. I was excited to see stumac even had it on sale so I ordered one immediately. Wasn't cheap but would be fine in the long run. Well the fun started when i contacted stumac to order the kit for a gibson. Well the first thing i find, you cant speak with a real person at stumac. You're directed to go to the web site. Ok thats what i did, ordered the complete kit for gibson at 15?% off sale, cool. After a few clicks and got the notation ill have my new kit in hand shortly. I found seconds later my debit card had been charged several hundred bucks and a date was given when my kit would arrive. Well it came, or should i say some kit arrived. and to my disappointment it was a kit not evern close to the high price one i orderd. I contact stumac by email only two days the respond with a useless note saying they will soon be intouch within 24 hours to reslove yor issue so dont worry. Two more days go by now they say the exact kit you ordered ( that we had on sale) has not been stock for weeks!! ..Now i was just encouraged to buy one several days ago cause 15% off helps so i did. So i texted them back, i got the same generic text saying someone will be in touch in 24 hrs. More days go by. I text again, ? Got the same identical text again stating the 24 return time. More datmys go by ? ? ? You guessed it. I text get generic reply ?? Texted yet again sure enough genric text. Now day and days and days go by and you guessed it more blue smoke up my ass!!! WHATS UP WITH STUMAC THEY STILL HAVE MY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS AND IVE GOT NOTHING I CAN USE ??? WHATS UP DAN????

It's one thing to lead an adventurous life and become a master at your chosen profession, that in itself is a laudable accomplishment. And it is quite another to rake all of that and share it freely, so that many, many others can benefit.
Thank you Dan for helping me learn a few things that make my life better.
Also I loved your story at the end about playing at the Fillmore. Great stuff!

“Black walnut, maple, 24 and 3 quarters, not too much lacquer… … see, Albert played it upside down…. ”

I just love how he picks up every guitar, inspecting it, telling us about the material and characteristics like it has actual souls.

“ Unicorn hairs, hawthorn woods, 10”, reasonably springy…. this wand belongs to Draco Malfoy….”

this part of Dan always reminds me of that wand maker Ollivander from Harry Potter series. Man knows his guitars!
