Christopher Cross and Michael McDonald - Ride Like The Wind

Cuando surgió la figura de Christopher Cross a finales de 1979, el panorama musical pop y rock convulsionó. Y lo hizo hasta tal punto que buena parte de la industria hubo de revisar sus esquemas hasta el tuétano, ya que de un modo aparentemente sencillo, un tejano entrado en carnes y con cara de tipo “normal”, se encaramó en los primeros puestos de las listas de todo occidente, cosechó cinco premios Grammy de golpe y porrazo en la gala del ’81 y ese mismo año obtuvo un Oscar y un Globo de Oro.
Y es que, el secreto del éxito sigue siendo un arcano incluso para los gurús de las grandes multinacionales discográficas, que a pesar de las décadas que llevan desde que se inventó el negocio del rock, deben de reconocer que la mayoría de las veces no saben cómo surge una Madonna, un Frank Sinatra, o como en el caso que nos ocupa, un músico tan alucinante como Christopher Cross, que consiguen el favor del público en todos sus estratos sociales y geográficos.
Christopher Charles Geppert nació en San Antonio, Texas, en mayo del año 1951, y pasó de tocar con Flash -un grupo desconocido de Austin, la capital del estado-, a firmar contrato con una multinacional del ramo, y de ahí a publicar un primer álbum llamado Christopher Cross.
Con este primer disco Cross da en el clavo, con un estilo muy personal, que redefine el rock contemporáneo dirigido al público adulto, con un puñado de baladas sofisticadas pero sin aparentes complicaciones para el oyente, que le permite llegar a un amplísimo espectro de consumidores y convertirse en la nueva estrella más grande de la recién comenzada década de los 80’s.
Dato anecdótico: Pocos meses después ganó cinco premios Grammy. Recibió en una misma gala (la de 1981) los cuatro premios principales: Mejor Grabación, Mejor Canción, Mejor Álbum y Mejor Nuevo Artista, record tan difícil de igualar, que sólo lo comparte con Norah Jones. De este álbum (que tiene un flamenco en la portada, el cual incluirá como distintivo durante décadas), destacan canciones que “todos hemos oído alguna vez” como ‘Sailing’ (que llegó al nº 1 en USA), ‘Ride Like the Wind’ (nº 2, y en la que canta el Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald) y ‘Never Be the Same’ (en el nº 15), tres hits en tan sólo cinco meses, a niveles de los Beatles o Elvis Presley.
‘Ride Like the Wind’ es una canción escrita e interpretada por el cantautor Christopher Cross. Fue lanzada al mercado discográfico en febrero de 1980 como el gran hit del ganador del codiciado Grammy. Alcanzó el segundo puesto en las listas de Estados Unidos y se mantuvo por cuatro semanas consecutivas, detrás de ‘Call Me’ de Blondie. En la tapa interior del disco, Cross dedicó este éxito a Lowell George, miembro de la banda Little Feat, que había muerto en 1979. Cuenta con la participación especial en los coros de Michael McDonald y un solo de guitarra de Cross.

Had ssen the Beato/CC x-view a while back. Having just watched Rick's just dropped, MD x-view, I had to find this.

Ridiculous talent. And if Beato's are representative, some of the most humble, thoughtful folks that have contributed to the American song book.

Grateful for having been in my youth, when these two talents ruled the air waves.
