I read the first ever graphic novel adaptation of William Golding's novel "Lord of the Flies" and I have thoughts! This beautiful hardcover is by the incredible Aimée De Jongh (writer AND illustrator). I also include 26 high resolution scans taken directly from the pages so you can get a good look at the art.

oh man, I has no idea yellowjackets was influenced by this comic, that's cool! Also the comic slayer or omnicat always have the best recommendations... also, this idea just came to me just now: books to read with your grandkids! hahaha :D

I never read "The Lord of the Flies" growing up either, as I grew up in South America. Now I'm putting it on my must read list. Incidentally, Beelzebub, considered sometimes to be an alternative name for Satan, and other times the name of a separate archdemon, means exactly that: "The lord of the flies."

I’ve read a couple Golding novels but when I was young (and LotF in high school). I remember him being difficult so I put him off until I was older - hey, that would be now! The novel is just loaded with symbolism (like Animal Farm). I’d enjoy this graphic novel for sure. Great review.

I never read Lord of the Flies nor did I watch the movie. Though I always been aware of it due to pop culture references. I’ll definitely check out this graphic novel if it’s ever released stateside. Thanks for the video Larry.

Larry, I ordered this book from across the pond based no small part on your recommendation and my love for Days of Sand. I can now agree that this book has a very chatty spine. It has lots to say, especially when the book is new and before the spine is stretched. Seems to have quieted down a great deal afterwards.

The Lord of the Flies is one of my favorite novels and one of the most important pieces of literature ever written, I feel. The central discussion at the heart of the novel is endlessly fascinating. Are humans nothing but wild, egotistical animals at heart and is it only the thin veneer of society that gives us moral and ethics? If you take away society most humans will find that what you considered your morals was actually society’s moral and you will become beasts again. Only a certain few (like Ralph) will continue to be good even if there is no law or social code forcing you to be good. It’s harrowing but also fascinating.
Also, the book doesn’t explain it and you seemed to be confused but the kids are supposed to be English school kids evacuated from Singapore during the Japanese invasion in WW2. There are no adults on the plane other than the pilot, who died in the crash. You should really read the book, it’s fantastic.

I have this book on my wishlist. Waiting for price to go down. I like Golding's novel. My understanding is that it's a faithful adaptation. Have you read J.G. Ballard's HIgh-Rise? It's similar in theme to Golding's book except the setting is a posh high rise apartment. Good review, Larry.

I haven't watched the 2nd season of Yellowjackets yet but the 1st season is great. I agree with Kristen. There is a lot of 90s nostalgia as well.

I always wonder how these kinds of comics hold up to their novel counterpart. There’s plenty of books I never read that have a comic adaption that I would love to check out.
