American tourists Ale and Andrew Kenney were at Iceland's Blue Lagoon spa when a volcanic eruption occurred nearby on August 22. Initially dismissing warnings as routine, the couple quickly realized the danger as alarms blared and guests fled the hot spring pools. The eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula forced the evacuation of 1,300 guests and staff, closing the popular geothermal spa. The volcanic activity, described as comparable to a recent eruption in May, sent lava flowing at a rapid rate and caused a fissure expansion from 3.9 km to 5 km. The meteorological office has warned of potential gas pollution from the eruption.

For anyone interested, this series of eruptions started in December 2023. This is the sixth. These eruptions have almost no significance to tourists except for the periodic closing of Blue Lagoon and a nearby hotel. This scenario could possibly continue for decades or longer. Scary in the moment but ultimately of no consequence for visitors, it impacts a teeny portion of one smaller corner of the country.

Cool video, thanks for sharing your experiences with this. This is certainly a once in a lifetime experience.

We visited Iceland on a Globus tour at the end of June. We were glad it didn’t erupt while we were there but we have been following the activity since we got home. Glad you got the chance to see a natural phenomenon and were able to get out safely.

I really wounder how you can have missed out all of these events before going to Iceland. Of course there are evacuations plans and some routine at this point so no reason to afraid tourists. This is a corner of the country and will not affect your traveling plans to Iceland unless you planned to go to Blue Lagoon. But there are other facilities like that, this are just the largest and close to the main air port.

I can't believe how uninformed some tourists are. This has been going on since November, when Grindavik and the blue lagoon were evacuated for the first time. The met office has warned for more than a week that an eruption was expected to start any time with very little warning time.

Lucky! You got to see it! Jealous! But seriously, Iceland is very organized, very good at monitoring these things, and there was no need to panic or be this dramatic. You got to experience something super cool.

How can anyone be so dumb?? This was expected, and is just the latest in a long series of eruptions all of which have been well documented and livestreamed around the world.
