"Tree Crops" by J Russel Smith is an outstanding visionary resource for this concept. Written in the 1930-40's (prior to the Green Revolution) he gives narrates examples of cultures around the world who rely on tree crops. He also shows how tree crop yields (at the time) could have replaced calories from grain production. The book is available for free online as a PDF.

In the USA we could feed nuts to the pigs as part of a diversified diet. The tradition here was to feed the pigs with raw milk, whey, clapboard etc., because that was readily available on the farms. We also have forest/pastured pigs. The trick is to rotate the pigs often so the clean up and fertilize the forest floor without being left there long enough to damage the forest.
