Wayland is making great headway in improvements but that doesn't mean that you have to use it today, so today let's go over some reason why you might want to avoid doing so.

The major difficulty with implementing Wayland is that every environment developer has to decide how to do the implementation. There is no drop-in package as with xorg.

I will use Wayland when the Linux Mint team gets around to it.

As one who uses Wayland if I can. It is simply a fact a lot of things that just work in X11 right now need workarounds in Wayland. I don't mean needing to learn new work arounds for a new thing... I mean that Wayland isn't quite feature complete to what X11 can do yet.

Wayland was built in the wrong order. Their first priority should have actually been to replace x11 features and Eco system. Instead they kept deferring to "that's not our responsibility that is the compositor's" etc.

When doing software development work, Windows flicker, vscode behaves poorly (due to xwayland) etc.

Too late... I've switched... damn it Brodie!

I also think of a great future of Wayland, but currently it still need to go a long way.
I have tried both GNOME & Plasma on Wayland recently, but both of them lags more than their Xorg counterparts. Also, lack of standard protocols for automation makes it a deal-breaker for me.

An updated video on Wayland implementations (kwin/mutter/wlr) and how core and custom protocols work would be nice.
No no I definitely don't plan to just send that instead of having a 30 minutes texting 😂 every time.

for me, the whole 'VSYNC shouldn't be toggle'able'-debacle turned me off completely. The mindset of the devs are counterintuitive. With wayland, the whole point was to modernize the decades-old display server. And, by simplifying displayserver, make it easier to expland with better features, and especially make it more efficient/ lower the latencies. But, it seems the devs - so far - aren't driven by community-needs, eg. the vsync-debacle. Take for example gaming. Gaming is a crucial part of what demands need to be addressed in a displayserver, VSYNC being one of those crucial features that needs to be dealt with properly. The reluctance to make vsync optional said it all, and i dont have much confidence in the project moving forward to adress these crucial features and goals.

Yes, there may be for some People things that wayland lacks now, but for me with gaming an Multimedia.. I use it Daily exclusively an i love it. especially the Feeling of smoothness with games.

I've been using Wayland+Nvidia+Fedora Gnome for the last ~6 months and it's been great. I'd still recommend Xorg though as there are still issues, just not deal breakers for me. I only browse the web and play music, so my own experience may vary wildly from others.

Edit: I should add, personally I think Wayland will be ready for most users in two years from now. Lots of work still needs to be done, e.g. color management, and a host of other bugs and features requests still waiting to be fixed and/or merged.

I often hear about the progress they made.. but I just tried it again and it still is a utterly broken mess on my new Nvidia Laptop (iGPU deactivated). It is beyond usable at this point and I do have a high tolerance for bugs and glitches in such a setup. It is at least 5 years from being usable.

Even on AMD and the Intel iGPU, it's just not a good experience and mostly broken.

"Big Wayland" cracked me up 🤣

Recently switched (for the lols) from BSPWM to Hyprland. With the dwindle layout, I actually feel quite at home. But the thing that pains me was a bit unexpected: I can't find a good replacement for conky.

Since I prefer to not have a bar, instead using a conky to display things like time, connection status, battery and so on... This hurts more than I expected it to.

I built an all AMD desktop machine a couple months ago and I haven't really had any issues with Wayland with KDE. Currently waiting on wayland tiling window managers to get mature enough to fully switch over to that.

My thoughts on Wayland are the following: Wayland is the future, but for many of us, Xorg is still the present.

the only problem I have with wayland on arch with KDE is screen sharing with third party software, specially teams

about the last video, that was exactly the issue i commented on.

that's why i am waiting for now. 1-) i don't have a wayland wm which can completely replace ratpoison for me, 2-) even if i have, the config is totally different because config file is not just for wm configuration, it's also for the compositor configuration. and it's much more complex. 3-) the most laptops on market are optimus laptops with intel+nvidia. and nvidia doesn't play nice.

You can see it on his face. What can you see on his face? when the well armed men from Big Wayland enter the room and point their guns at Brodie of course. #FreeBrodie.

I have tried switching from Xorg 2-3 years ago, but some things just don't work on wayland. Now I have no real gauge of how much wayland has improved, but making vsync an option is more than enough to make me switch, maybe

Switched from i3 -> sway on my laptop because some applications were using significantly more resources than they should. The experience has taken some getting used to, but Wayland runs noticeably smoother and almost all of my applications have native Wayland versions. Now that Nvidia has given in and is working on native support with Wayland, the project should be ready for general use in another 2-3 years
