Depends how cool the second thing is and how likely it is to reschedule it.

For example, if I arranged to get coffee with the first friend but the second friend had a spare eras tour ticket for me the same day then obviously I would choose the second option and hope my first friend would understand.

As long as you apologise, do actually reschedule, don't make a habit of if, and are honest about why you're cancelling then I think it's fine.
