Aside from their excellent beers and wine, lovely castles and countryside's, and savory foods, Czechia is also a haven for book lovers. They have more libraries than any other European country, coming out to roughly 5.3 libraries per 10, 000 people. Because of this, Czechia is one of many countries with a 99% literacy rate for both men and women. The US has a mere 79% literacy rate. Note that women in the US rank higher then men.

8:55 Czechia won the (ice) hockey world championship in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2010; Czechoslovakia won in 1947, 1972, 1979, 1977 and 1985. Canada won the most championships before 1962, but between 1963 and 1986 it was always either USSR or Czechoslovakia (1962 and 1987 it was Sweden). Canada won again 1994, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2015, 2016 and 2021. In sum Canada and USSR/Russia won each 27 times, Czechia/Czechoslovakia 12 times, Sweden 11 times. Other winners were Finland (4), USA (2), UK (1) and Slovakia (1). Czechia has about a third of the population Canada has (and less than 0.8% of the area).
10:00 History came a bit short. Czechia started out as the Duchy and since 1158 Kingdom of Bohemia and its subordinate Margraviate of Moravia as one of the four kingdoms within the Holy Roman Empire. Since 1310 it was ruled by House Luxembourg; one of its most famous kings was King Karel I, as Karl IV (Charles IV) also Holy Roman Emperor; he was born (1316, baptized as Venceslav) and died (1378) in Prague. Venceslav was educated in Paris and got his confirmation name Charles by King Charles IV of France, after Charlemagne. He became Roman-German King in 1346, King of Bohemia 1347, King of Italy 1355, King of Burgundy 1365 and Holy Roman Emperor 1355. In 1348 he founded Univerzita Karlova (Charles University) in Prague, the oldest university in Central Europe (which includes the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Czechia). The last king of House Luxembourg was his younger son Emperor Sigismund, King of Hungary and Croatia (since 1387), German King (since 1411), King of Bohemia (since 1419) and Emperor (1433-1437); after his death his son-in-law Albrecht of Habsburg inherited the crowns of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia. In 1415 the Bohemian pre-Protestant reformer Jan Hus was executed for heresy at the Council of Constance, but the Hussite movement grew even stronger afterwards. In 1420 the Hussite wars broke out; in 1432 a compromise between Catholic forces led by Emperor-Elected Sigismund and the moderate Utraquist faction within the Hussites was found, and in 1434 the radical Taborites were defeated. The Hussite Wars were notable for the extensive use of early hand-held firearms such as hand cannons, as well as wagon forts. (There is more, but...)

I'm not a big hockey fan, but hockey is a big deal in Czechia/Czech Republic, and in Slovakia as well. It's an amazing place to live, mainly because it's mellow. One of the things that didn't get covered in the video here is the Czech sense of humor; Czech humor is very dry and witty with a focus on either irony or amazingly precise, intelligent, multi-level sarcasm. Overall, Czechia/Czech Republic is one of the best places to live. I lived there for a short time, and within minutes of returning to the USA, I'd realized just how big a mistake I'd made.

Czechs usually lose to Canada in hockey. Still, being a counrty of around 10 million people, we are very good at hockey and we are very proud of our team. We constantly end in the top 4. Last year we ended up in third place after beating the US team.

Check out how Prague looked like after our win in Nagano winter olympics in 1998. I can't think of a better example of our love for hockey.

I must say your first attempt of "Ř" was better than most.

Řekl mi jeden Řek, abych řekl, kolik je v Řecku řek. A já mu řekl, že nejsem Řek, takže mu nemohu říct, kolik je v Řecku řek. :D :D You can try, you're welcome. ;)

Czechs are known in Europe predominantly (other than beer and Prague) thanks to an old cartoon - Krtek. In Poland we find their language hilarious - like toddlers with speach defect (polish sounds same to them), we jokingly call them pepiki (comes from their version of name John and sounds adorable). Three of their most known songs: Helena Vondráčková - Malovaný džbánku (1974; musical/pop/jazz dunno what genre it is) ; Antonín Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" (classical romantic, you probably know it) & Ivan Mládek - Józek z bagien (meme song)

One of many key differences between Bohemia and Moravia is their choice of drink. Bohemians prefer beer and Moravians prefer wine.

The hockey world championship is taking place right now. Perhaps see you in the final, Canada. One of the most memorable matches to me - the 1998 Olympics semi final, CZE x CAN though, as we watched it in school. A few classes huddled together watching a very small tv. :-)

Ice hockey is a big deal here (imagine a big event like your Super Bowl but with ice hockey and Czechs :D my whole family gets together and we watch it), very proud of our team. I used to play ice hockey when I was a little girl after my parent taught me to skate when I was 4, fun, that's how I lost some of my baby teeth and why I have a scar on my chin :D

Remember, never go up against a Canadian or a Czech in a hockey match. Otherwise, you pucked with the wrong opponent. >:D

Czech republic places almost always in the best 4 states in Ice Hockey World Championships, so there is definitely a rivalry with Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and Russia.

Just remember the ORIGINAL (yes, that can't be stressed enough) Pilsener and Budweiser beers come from Czechia, they are literally named after the towns (Plzen and Budvar). They are not American.

Its more than that. We give to the world "drucks" (patent buttons), sugar cubes, soft contact lences and of course Semtex. Americans had low grade copy of our Budvar called Budweiser (original Budvar beer you can buy as Czechwar I think). And our scientist and doctor Jánský even discover blood groups before everyone else. We had our own sence for humor (but is very simillar to british comedy) and terrible traffic in bigger citties... You can ask "Acting Reichs Protector" Reinhard Heydrich he found himself that driving aroud Prague in car is a "ride for life" somedays and it was in 1942! And thats a minimum things I can say so by from South Bohemia from town with two big beer breweries (Budvar and Samson) and come to enjoy our nice land (but not Prague... Pragers are insane :-D )
