East Germans used to joke you could tell the Stasi had bugged your house because you had a new cabinet and there was a generator in the street powering it.

The Lives Of Others is a truly great movie. The way it portrays a strangely passive-aggressive totalitarian state is unforgettable.

True story, in 1983 I was almost arrested in Ost Berlin by the Stasi as ein americaner spion. All a misunderstanding and quickly resolved. Before they found out I was an American Military Officer. When I signed back in the day book at Charlie I was shaking. Driven to Tegal, put on a plane to Frankfurt then to London. A very scary experience. And too close.

Fantastic film, so much attention to detail and a wealth of knowledge for so few words spoken, and extremely historically accurate. From threatening reprisals to rewarding cooperation, to the quick West German Der Spiegel magazines in the writer's drawer. Such a good film, it was recommended to me by my German professor from East Germany, and I would absolutely recommend it

The Stazi had tens of thousands of informants in East Germany.

It's not true communism unless every citizen is contained in the collective. It takes an entire village just to bake one Pol Pot pie.
