In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains causes, symptoms and treatment of an itching anus (aka itching bottom).

You can often do simple things yourself to ease an itchy bottom (anus). Get medical help if the itching does not stop.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT AN ITCHY BOTTOM:

- you have an itchy bottom that is not going away
- the itch keeps coming back
- you have pain in your bottom
- you have blood in your poo, which might be dark red or black
- you're bleeding or leaking liquid from your bottom
- you've noticed a change in your bowel habits
- you have an itchy bottom and feel itchy on other parts of your body
- you notice a change around your anus that is not usual for you

CAUSES OF AN ITCHY BOTTOM

There's not always a clear cause of an itchy bottom. If it gets better quickly, it might have been caused by something that does not need treatment, like sweating a lot in hot weather.

If it lasts longer, you might be able to get an idea of the cause from any other symptoms you have. See a doctor if you're worried or if your symptoms keep coming back.

Other causes include: Threadworm / pinworms; Piles (haemorrhoids); Poo leaking or pooing you cannot control; Diarrhoea or bowel incontinence; Sores, swelling or irritation; fungal infection or a sexually transmitted infection (STI); eczema or psoriasis

I'm an ED nursing assistant and have a shadow shift in sexual health next week. Your videos are really helping me understand things in patient friendly ways, so thank you! Hoping to progress to medicine eventually and complete the ACCS pathway.

I am currently experiencing a horrible rash. I’ve had it once before. It’s a fungal infection. Dr prescribed LamiSil, Ararax for itching and triamcinolone acetonide 0.1 % cream. It’s the weekend so I have cream to use, not the other. I messaged my dr and hopefully will get back to me on Monday. I am having urine/bowel leakage issues that probably are causing the problem. I am having a procedure soon to correct these problems, so hopefully this will stop. But right now I’m miserable. 😢😢😢. Thank you for sharing this information!

Wild to see the contrast between US and UK next steps. I can't just "go to my pharmacist" as a first step, because I always need a prescription from a medical doc. Better to have the freedom

I get itching bottom too. Never scratch! Makes it worse! It is an infection so what I do is I get a warm water strong paper towel with soap on it and rinse my bottom. Then I use a plain warm water paper towel to get rid of the soap. Then I get a dry paper towel and make sure I dry good. Sweating? I do the same thing. It works.

Only under Dr's advice, you might find to wash the area well then apply zinc and castor cream may help. The natural lubricant in the bowel can leak outside and cause itching.

Use baby wipe after you clean with toilet paper. Toilet paper can irritates your bottom as well as it's dried. Baby wipes helps the itch. Especially after you poop.

I had a Fissure for 9 years. It finally went when I was virtually bed bound in recovery for something for 5 weeks
