An analogy might be an athlete practices for a game/match by doing various exercises and drills. A photographer practices for a job by doing test shoots.

You missed commenting on coverage of costs, including rentals and compensation for model(s). I am assuming the photographer who elects to do test shoots covers costs. Might be able to negotiate with suppliers, but would like your thoughts/experience.

Hey Scott, question for you, what does a stylist do? I mean, I know what they literally do, but why do you need one on a shoot when you have a brief/for a test shoot when you’re testing out a new creative concept (that I would have assumed you would style yourself)?

the reason people are confused about 'test shoots' is because to beginners its not clear who pays who. You didn't address any of that
