We've been having these 23mph winds in the afternoons for 3 days now. This morning I found a broken off, jet black, bracket fungus under a nearby Water Oak tree. It actually landed just 3' away from my fire table. LOL! Looks like I'll finally be trying a bracket fungus and cotton fire roll. I've heard for years that it's a great filler. Let's just see.

That looks like a Hairy Hexagonia (Hexagonia hydnoides). It will be interesting to see how you get different results from different kinds of bracket fungus.

Thank you for your simple instructions, relaxing and easy manner, and most of all inspiration. I am 56 and managed to start a bowdrill fire for the first time after watching your videos. I can now add this to the other techniques I have learned from watching your channel. Keep teaching and inspiring!

Hi David! I think what really made this episode stand out was how you improvised to get the job done despite sub optimum results from the fungus. Being able to quickly formulate a plan B or even C, especially out in the woods, is an essential skill. Excellent!

I use Horse Hoof fungus. That will smolder for quite a while depending on the size. A small 1.5" will burn almost 1/2hr. Enabling you to transfer your ember to start another fire🔥.

Another awesome job, thanks David. I keep a chunk of dried chaga in all of my packs because it works so well for making an ember, and you can make tea with it, dry it again and still use it to make another ember.

Always look forward to seeing your videos, informative, straight forward, and uncut. A life saving skill demonstrated by a master in fire making craft. Much respect! We have been having the same winds here on the Delmarva penesilua.

Knowing that, it seems like you should be able to do a "whatever you find in the woods" fire roll. Fibers balled up from poplar bark or certain plant stems in lieu of cotton, wood from a broken branch or a flat stone for the surface, and some fungus in place of the ashes. Only thing you might need to bring then is a knife to help process some of the materials.

When I would drive to Waycross Ga to work I would pass fields of cotton. Could you use wild unprocessed cotton to make a fire roll? Great vid, God bless.

Could you use Amadou or Chaga in a fire roll?
