Thermite Reaction (reaction only)

NOTE FROM THE PROFESSOR: In this reaction aluminium is converted to aluminium oxide and iron oxide to iron. Al + Fe2O3 → Al2O3 + Fe. The interaction between Al and O is stronger than that between Fe and O so the reaction liberates a large amount of heat.

Did this reaction once in the backyard. Got grounded from Chemistry for 5 years <_<

Nah. It as been showed to be a lab error. They tested the combustion in presence of oxygen: they should have tested the simple in the absence of oxygen, has thermite has its own oxygen. When they tested the sample in the right conditions, it tested negative. Also the temperature never got high enough at trade center site. the aluminum seen flowing from the floors came from the plane. The funny little metal ball came from welding in the construction and the cutting in the rescue. Plane+Tower=Fall

You really get to see all the cool stuff :) Thanks for the videos

Could I use a termite reaction to refine scrap gold in computer parts without burning down into a alloy or another metal?

Would it be possible to make a steam engine that ran on thermite reactions?

It would be super awesome if you guys did a video about Graphene, one of the most exciting new materials today :)

thermite always just reminds me of breaking bad lol

Brady, have you guys ever gotten requests of doing a huge thermite reaction over a bunch of ice blocks? Cause I'd like to hear the guys explain the chemistry there. I believe a practical example was given on Mythbusters a few year back on myths involving thermite, but they weren't completely sure about the chemistry behind it all. Yes, it involves a big boom :)

Thermite. Very dangerous, but oh so awesome!

I hope I'm not crossing the line asking for a specific reaction to be included today or some other day in your videos. I would really like to see the reaction of p-nitroaniline and concentrated sulfuric acid when heated. There is a version of it on youtube, but I know you could make a better one. Oh, and I love the way you chose to celebrate Berzelius day.

You're gonna need a shitton of thermite to take down two 110 story steel covered in fire-retardant structures. Could you take those buildings down? Yes, but the sheer amount of thermite reactions necessary quickl dispells the demolition due to thermite story.

Put it on top of a car - burns right through it and then the engine. Might even explode, tho its never happened to me but ive done it on old abandoned cars...

maybe, if all of the solid parts were made out of tungsten-carbide and it had a very effective cooling system.

This is how the railroad tracks were welded together in the old days.... Also when I was a young teenage prankster vandal is better word), I used to do this over the engine compartments of
