HOW TO DUCK GYBE (LIGHT WINDS)

The duck gybe is great move to learn, not only does it give more style to your gybes but it's actually easier to plane out of than the carve gybe

Thanks, Will. Everyone shows this at flat out planing speed, which is intimidating and bloody painful as it inevitably goes wrong. Getting the muscle memory is key to any manoeuvre and so much easier when you're not waiting 3 months for the broken ribs to heal. 😂😂

I find it easier in no planing conditions to change feet before ducking the sail, because then is your body parallel to the sail after ducking and you can better control the power when the clew comes through the wind. Additionally your body is not twisted and you don't push the leeward rail in the water, both comes to instability. More of these, please.

I agree with using a freestyle sail like Severne Freek or Duotone Idol as the shorter boom makes it easier to learn, especially if it is like 5.2 M2 or smaller. I saw a good tip in Tricktionary windsurfing encyclopedia which showed that you can get on better by not reaching to the clew but instead only less than to the plastic boom clips, then when you duck you are reaching to similar position on what will be new side; this means that when you pull the boom back you are less than full arm span to reach near the mast. Works for me in not quite planing winds. In contrast Colin Whippy Dixion on Tenerife Windsurfing showed the idea of throwing clew towards nose of board when at full planing speed. Well i tried that non planing and the sail just rotated 360 degrees; quite funny but not very useful. Best tip when starting is to go out with small sail in light winds on big board and hold the boom at clew end with clew pointing dead into wind to reassure yourself that nothing terrible is going to happen. Another good first step is practice helitacks but stop half way with sail clew first, then after sailing straight broad reach for a while, then turn 180 degrees like a gybe or something because this is a bit like finishing off a non planing duck gybe.
