„Happiness” - Winning Score of the Zurich Film Music Competition

Music written by Sebastian Androne-Nakanishi, winner of the Golden Eye, offered by the Zurich Film Music Competition.

„It was a HUGE joy being among these outstanding guys (and gal): Baptiste Cathelin, Antoine Duchêne, Juan J. Ochoa and Lente Verelst as one of the five finalists out of 304 participants from 44 countries without age limit! I was also extremely surprised when we were told that the level of quality of this edition was the highest since the start of the competition, 7 years ago! So all the selected compositions were extremely good and very close in terms of quality! So it was really difficult for the jury to select the 5 finalists!

I've never been in a competition with such a high level of music professionalism AND musical finesse! After the 1st rehearsal I realised how lucky and proud I should be to have been chosen amongst them! It was incredible to watch the same short film ("Happiness" by Steve Cutts) with 5 different (but convincing) musical approaches. The way the tone of the short film changed due to the different musical strategies proved once again the overwhelming power and influence that the music has on a movie.

I had a lot to learn from my fellow colleagues (I hardly wait to share our scores to each other!!), from the conversations with the jury (Cliff Martinez, Frank Strobel, Christine Aufderhaar and Sabine Gisiger) from the experience of being part of the wonderful ZURICH FILM FESTIVAL, from working with one of the best orchestras in the entire world - the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the list can go on!!

On the 4th of October I was announced as the winner of the competition. It was overwhelming because I knew how good the other pieces were and how tough the decision of the jury must have been! This prize comes with a great responsibility built on the trust that the jury invested in me but it also comes as a confirmation of being on the right track! There is much to do, to improve on and to explore and I can't wait to see what's next!”
