I live in the Netherlands and the thing with knives is not really true. But I do have to say that it feels like you want to hurt them with it when you gift someone a normal (but sharp) knife with no explanation. My father got a knife (like a butchers knife) from my mother, which he asked for, and he uses it to make spareribs. He is still happy with it.

Way back in the olden days in Norway if a man proposed marriage to a girl they were allowed to spend time alone, totally unchaperoned, but the man was tasked with carving a very ornate wooden spoon, the more ornate the better, it ment his hands were kept busy lol and the completed ornate spoon was proudly displayed in the newly weds home as a mark of his respect for her prior to the marriage and a mark of her chastity prior to the marriage. The progress of the carving of the spoon was checked on by her father at regular intervals.
