Dont need to change a planet l, need to change our self

My way if understanding the opposite point is that when you take a blank canvas or page, it is a lot easier to make that into what you want it to be, but if you take one with scribbles drawn on in permanent marker, it is a lot more difficult than just starting from fresh. The changes we have made to earth will be a lot more difficult to reverse than just starting again somewhere else.

Colonizing other worlds isn’t a matter of escaping earth for me. It’s a matter of preserving our homeworld, as well as humanity itself.

I’ve been watching dr. Neil for a while and whenever we have class discussions I just think about what he says on that topic and I am now the smart kid

Neil, that's why terraforming isn't done to escape, it's done to expand.

To me it's not about escaping earth. It's about exploration and colonization. Same way we travelled the seas looking for new continents. We've colonized all of earth, so naturally the next thing is to colonize further into space.

That's a good point. The only issue is there isn't any more land. Our pop keeps growing and there's not that much room. We need room to grow crops and animals. Need room for people to live. So what then?

Earth is still earth, it doesn’t need changing

Imagine saying to your grandkids "Back in my day we had Earth"

It's not that people want to trash the place then move to the next, some people recognize that the earth won't last forever and if we want to continue as a species after it ends we would need a new home.

Its not about replacing Earth. It's expanding.

I think it’s less running away from Earth because we trashed it and more about ensuring we as a species can continue to live in case an extinction event happens on Earth like a meteor strike.

Except the objective of colonizing mars isn’t “running away” from earth, and I don’t see anyone suggesting that. Multi-planetary colonization is the forefront of human discovery and progression. The objective is to learn and grow as a species. We can explore our universe further AND learn to maintain it, these things aren’t mutually exclusive.

It’s easier to convince people to terraform mars than it is to convince the entire population of earth to be environmentally responsible/sustainable.

I've literally said baisically exactly this to people for years, let's focus on earth, instead of running from our problems

Its not because we are trashing this planet, it’s so that cataclysmic events don’t wipe out the entire human race. (Meteor, Nuclear War, etc.)

Had a thought but then I realized regardless of what I think about, he's right.
To geoengineer you need to make a commitment as a species, to NOT make the same mistake that cost us our planet again on the new one.
But if we make that commitment anyways, then we should make that commitment NOW for the planet we already have
