The Beatles - Madman

preview_player
Показать описание
- Recorded January 14, 1969 during the Get Back/Let It Be sessions.
- John Lennon original song.
- There is a relation between the Madman song and Mean Mr Mustard, as they were played together in the sessions.
- Whereas Mean Mustard was a mean old man who shouted obscene things, the Madman is a lunatic who wears pink pajamas and lives on a farm!
- Coincidently there was a meme started in 2015 called "John Lennon The Absolute Madman" featuring a picture of John kind of doing the 'ministry of silly walks' also a pre-internet Monty Python meme.

Lyrics
With the Madman a comin'
He's gonna do you no harm
He's wearin' pink pajamas
And he lives on a farm
Farmers gonna get ya
Got to get ya to somewhere
To be alone
Oh, when the fat freak's a movin'
He's gonna feed you no s#!t
He's gonna force us together
He's gonna give us a fit
Now, (mumbling)
[0:53 - 1:23 Instrumental Break]
Madman a comin'
Gonna do you no harm
He's wearin' pink pajamas
And he lives on a farm
Farmers gonna get ya
Got to get ya to somewhere
To be alone
Oh, when the Madman is fallin'
Gonna (???) -arm
He's (???)
And he lives on a farm
Oh, he's gonna get ya
Got to get ya to somewhere good
To be alone
Yeah
Madman a comin'
Gonna do you no harm
Got to wear pajamas
Cause he lives on a farm
He's gonna get ya
Gonna count us somethin'*
To be alone
Oh
(Do you no harm)
[2:25 - 2:54 Instrumental Break]
Fifty raw potatoes
Standin' more than a pole*
Gonna try to count 'em
But they started to go
You got someone
To be someone**
To be on your own
You know to go*
You know to go me (???)*
You know where to go to me
Did you (???) -low/-ole***
(???) -low***
[3:25 - 3:59 Instrumental Break]
Madman a comin'
Gonna do you no harm
He's wearin' pink pajamas
Cause he lives on a farm
He's got to get somewhere
To get to be on his own
He goes on*
The (mumbles)
Where ever you go on
(Mumbling)
(4:33 Yankee John Doodle)
* Unclear lyric / approximation
** Could be "You got to get some words | To be someone" also being someone is also in unfinished piece "Watching Rainbows"
*** Sounds to be "Did you fall in low?"

Imagine this one completed and polished on the Let It Be album.

Mr. Mustard already existed at this point - it was pre-White Album - but the groove is very similar.

Damn this is a tight jam. Ringo really showing off, but so is the rest of the band. Wish this was properly released, but I’d guess it partially evolved into Mean Mr. Mustard.

In the second chapter of Get Back, by Peter Jackson, at minute 00:36:12 John, Paul and Ringo play part of this version of Madman.

Imagine had they stuck it out for a couple more years. Then again, it is what it is.

It was John's candidate for another song for the album/show they were making after they'd abandoned Across The Universe. In the end he opted for Dig A Pony as his second song to go with Don't Let Me Down. George had left at this point. It's John on organ, Paul lead guitar and Ringo drums...see Sulpy-Schweighardt book

So the Get Back doc confirms it's Paul on guitar and John on electric piano (Pianet) here. Super interesting.

1:17, pretty good playing by Paul considering he was using John's Casino, meaning he had to play it upside down!

Sounds like an early run-through each getting a feel for the song. Kind of reminds me of Bad Boy just a bit. Would have liked to hear Paul doing some harmony

It sounds rough because it's a jam...they also rehearsed Mean Mr. Mustard and Watching Rainbows on this day. Watching Rainbows has lyrics from I Am the Walrus set to a simple A to D chord pattern, thus was probably just meant to be an improv.

Madman is absolutely brilliant, even better that Mean Mr. Mustard, that was the final recording of this gem.
