If you thought the drums in this were something, check out a live version of their song 'Arkadia'. The drumming is just fckn relentless.

For live shows they use one of two drummers: the OG Kami drummer Hideki Aoyama or western Kami drummer Anthony Barone. Both are amazing.

"Karate" also features djent-like riffs and a J-pop melody. Loudwire's Graham Hartmann described the song as "incredibly charming. Instrumentally, it’s also heavy as hell. The song’s main riff is way low on the sonic spectrum, chugging away in a no-nonsense djent fashion." “Karate” took home the trophy for Best Metal Song @ the 2016 Annual Loudwire Music Awards. Karate
explained that the lyrics are about never giving up and always moving forward, no matter what difficulties need to be endured. Furthermore, Karate choreographed described how the dance moves were made to help express the message of the song, as most of the lyrics were in Japanese 🇯🇵. That "Hashire" in karate will always tear me up every time. It just gives me a sense of epicness and energy that I have never felt with other songs before. Su-Metal voice has matured over the years now that she is in her early 20s. Noticing little things like Su-Metal removing her IEM at the 2016 UK 🇬🇧 Download Festival to hear the crowd always gets a thumbs up from me.
Kitsune Up 🦊🦊🦊🤘🤘🤘🇯🇵🇸🇬#notacult.

There is more that you can hear from Su-Metal in-term of vocals:-
1. "Amore" (Wembley Arena).
2. "No Rain No Rainbow" (Legend A Baptism XX).
3. "Akatsuki" (Budokan Black Night) & (The Unfinished Version @ Makuhari Messe).
4. Rondo Of Nightmare With Mischief Of Metal Gods Intro @ Budokan Black Night).

I know what you mean about the high pitch vocals, but they were basically children at the time and I think they were marketing on that at the time. Watch it live at Download UK 2016, the crowd singing along, no high-pitched vocals, Kami band in their glory, Su belting it out and all in the pouring rain. I’ve been listening to Metal Kingdom doing reps, it’s a slower anthem song that gets me pumped up, came out early 2023, awesome video.

You might like “Catch Me If You Can “, it’s about 6 minutes long as the band play a long introduction 😊😎

"WTF JUST HAPPENED?!"
That's pretty much the standard response everyone has the first time they experience Babymetal.

There's so much to unpack when it comes to Babymetal. much. I could write an essay.

But thanks to rah2287 I don't have to. 😋 They seem to have covered all the important bits so I'll leave it at that.

Recommended songs? There are so many. Pretty much anything post Karate will probably blow you away. Anything pre Karate might have a little to much cutesy in it for you, like those small sections in this song. Not that they don't exist in later releases, it's just not as much.

My top 3 recommendations would be...
Road of Resistance, a full on rock anthem. But it has to be the LIVE version.
Starlight. This was a speedmetal-esque (or close to it, I suck at genres) tribute to one of their guitarists who had died. As a bonus, the MV is really cool.
BxMxC. AKA BabyMetal Cypher. Babymetal raps. Nuff said.

And, yeah, like Band Maid, live is so much better.

The irony here is that when Babymetal started to take off, all the metal purists dumped all over the group. Claiming that they were nothing but a gimmick, a 'manufactured group', "That's not metal!" and that they wouldn't last long.

And here we are 12 years later. Babymetal is bigger than ever and half the "pure" metal bands that were active when they debuted have fallen by the wayside. The funny part here is that, while all the 'purists' were dumping on the girls, people like Rob Zombie, Rob Halford, the members of Dragonforce and Metallica and so many other metal icons we all doting on and supporting the hell out of Babymetal. Rob Zombie literally called one hater jealous, "because you can't rock out as hard as these little girls" (or something like that).

I was the same as you initially with the "child like cutesy" vocals at first... but I found that those vocals are not a majority part of the songs and later I began to appreciate it because it contrasts so well with the heavy music.

BABYMETAL can be a lot of contrast. They mix genres that should not go together but it works. It works so well that BABYMETAL has brought my love of heavy metal back from the brink of boredom and stagnation.

BABYMETAL has a few great music videos Karate, Megitsune (both for the story the video tells), iine (definitely WTF) and Doki Doki Morning (to see how young they started). However... BABYMETAL live is where this group is shines! Su-metal's vocals are amazing and consistent while doing choreography. Moametal and Yuimetal hype the crowd and harmonize. There is different choreography for each song. ( Not just random dance routines but their choreography helps interpret the song without even knowing the language) The Kami-band which performs only in live (not studio) sound heavier and way better.

BABYMETAL have about 60 songs and in their repertoire and every song is different from each other. Many reactors have been heard to say "I wasn't expecting that!" or "WTF!" or just watch stunned with their mouths agape trying to figure out what they are watching. Many of their songs lyrics promote positivity and encouragement and many of their songs will awaken your emotions. I have seen reactors and myself tear up at times even without understanding the lyrics. The emotions show even more when you understand the lyrics. But some songs are just to make you happy and that is good too. I initially thought it strange when I (56 year old metalhead) found myself smiling and happy watching a group singing and dancing a metal song.

Sorry for the long post, but I will end it with a recommendation.
Road of Resistance, Live in Japan ( but any BABYMETAL song will do!)

You'll need to keep in mind that Babymetal started when the girls were preteens. You are going to hear vocals of children. I think you can get past that if you are open minded. Just remember that the girls, as young as they were, were kicking booty the whole time. Have fun and welcome to The Foxhole.

What happened? You just fell into the Fox Hole....the only thing more powerful than a Black Hole. Nothing except pure joy can escape it. Welcome.

Welcome to Babymetal - enjoy the journey.

I sometimes wish I could hear them for the first time again - they have a huge diverse catalogue with lots of spectacular live performances to enjoy.

Just remember that nearly every song is different, so take your time and check out their most recent work along with some of their classics from when they were very young.

I’ll leave song suggestions to others who will show up soon I’m sure… you’ll find there is a very broad based and knowledgeable BM fan community.

Hope you enjoy some more Babymetal to challenge your mind and lift your spirits 🤘🦊

Your face at the beginning was exactly like my face when I first discovered them, haha. Karate was also the first song of theirs that I fell for, but now I love pretty much all their stuff.

As for the cutesy chants, I would also have said that I was not a fan of that at first, but now it’s part of what makes them fun. The reason for that is that they’re just so damn charming that you can’t help but go along with it. Beside, they don’t do that anymore in their more recent stuff.

The one welcome you down the foxhole. As stated, always listen to live performance. Thats where they excel. I recommend a Su solo of akatsuki, road of resistance live in japan for a masterclass in crowd control or iijime dame zettai live at sonisphere in front of 50k plus uk metal heads

I'm Atiny here from your other reactions, but also listen to Babymetal. Other songs I love by them are Megitsune, The One and Rondo of Nightmare.

You have almost 13 years of Babymetal music to catch up on, so make sure to set some time aside for it 🙂. Although they do have some good music videos, the live performances is were they really stand out. Give _"Road of Resistance"_ a try. The official live in Japan video.

BABYMETAL is performance art. If you view them as such then they are undisputed genius, you can put preconceived ideas about bands and genres and any “correctness” aside and just enjoy the beautifully produced art they offer. Their latest album is very different and VERY good.

Hanabie are the real deal in the space, they really did start as a school activity and really do bring something special to the genre. That doesn’t mean BABYMETAL aren’t excellent or bring nothing, but remember, they are performance art…

Japanese female voices tend to have a much higher pitch, so take that in consideration. They sound "childish" because they were in their early teens when this MV was produced. Also, the girls are tiny; Moa and Yui were barely 60 inches tall and Su around 61-62 inches. Now in their 20's (Happy Birthday Moa Kikuchi), Su-metal's voice is more mature and she has gained more control over her vocals.

Three amazing teens Sumetal Yui metal and Moa metal who started in 2010 aged 12 and 11, three years before Band Maid and other girl rock bands. Invented a new genre of metal called Kawaii metal or cute metal, and there aren't many who can claim that!
