Was Sys Admin. Took Systems Analyst job for start up. Mixture of network, cloud and java engineer, on top of making sure all tech works. Very busy. Very quick pivots of tasks. But also almost no micromanaging as long as I keep delivering. They find out I’m interested in moving into DevOps in the next three years? Have k8’s setup and dockerfiles ready in the next two weeks for these specific projects. It’s like a “build your own career”-project kit, at the pace of breakneck self-doubt, but it’s honestly the most fun I’ve ever had at work. As long as I show progress and enthusiasm, they keep me around. And I literally learn on the job. I’m scared to death that I’m forgetting some minutia that will bite us later, but honestly the pressure makes me focus. And there’s nothing quite like triple checking stuff to cement new lessons into your brain.

For anyone doubting they can do it: Know that that’s just your brain messing with you. It’s all just learning! Yes, it’s uncomfortable, but it’s absolutely worth it. I studied for a whole year before being able to move into this job, having applied to more jobs than I care to admit being denied employment by.
Study, interview, second or third interview, rejection, study more, just keep grinding.

It won’t take me three years to be a DevOps engineer, now. Maybe in title, sure, but as far as in practice? If all turns out well, I’ll be adding DevOps skills to my resume by the end of this year.

Good luck to you all! Hang in there, keep working hard at it, and don’t give up! You’ve got this! :)

I even love it more, when there are things happening! :) The challenges, the drive to learn every day, the new problems that I have to solve! :) And yes, I work in a work envirement where I am the only "it guy", so noone botheres me :D
