I remember an ex military on a forum repeating what an officer told him and his troops, saying that "some might die, some might get mutilated, others will have PTSD and nightmares, but the really scary thing is some of you might like it". This speech lives rent free in my head.

Dude was paying 110% attention to his drill instructor, “men, it’s killed or be killed do NOT hesitate to pull that trigger.” Probably smiling as the instructor said it lol

I had three great uncles that served in WWII. One was in a US Army band because he was small and played three instruments, and he said he felt guilty because he had it so easy. Another was in the Navy on a carrier flight deck and would tell stories all day long. The third was in the Army infantry that landed in Italy. He never talked about the war.

The Ronald Speirs affect, he said, “you men don’t know you’re already dead, that’s what you’re afraid to fight.” Basically he accepted his fate, whatever it was going to be.

Reminds me of an old Samurai quote.

"Engage in combat fully determined to die and you will be alive; wish to survive in the battle and you will surely meet death."

As an Army Captain in Afghanistan 2017-2019, it's a pleasure to watch this man. My great grandparents were in World War two, 99 last June- July, my grandparents were in Vietnam 66-68, my dad Desert 🏜. We all came home healthy ( body and mind!) PTSD is over utilized, but it is very real for the people who have it.

Most people come back from war with PTSD, others with nostalgia.

He reminds me of the British soldier Carton de Wiart. Fought in both world wars, sustained a bunch of injuries. One including having his hand removed and despite not having a hand, the dude still gladly fought.

He was quoted saying “frankly, I enjoy the war”

My grandpa died about 10 years ago but he was the same way. He was in the Pacific Theater and would speak fondly about horrific things. Told war stories vividly and cerebrally on a regular basis. He would get together annually with a group of guys he fought with, near the end it was just him and a handful of others.

Hated the Japanese until the day he died
