I heard this WW2 Vet speaking about the Vietnam Vets and Afghan Vets to an extent. He said "when we came back home, we all went together by sea and it's quite a long voyage hauling the things they were hauling back, so in that time you got to talk about what you've all just experienced together, and it was a great way to decompress some before you had to look your family in the face . The Vietnam guys would rotate back to the states, maybe 2 at a time, and fly on a commercial airplane and didn't have the time nor brothers in arms to talk with and help each other to get through and process the enormity of what you had to do as as a war fighter. They were on Pan-Am and back home in 12 hours. How is it OK to send a man into the jungle to stalk and kill and have friends killed etc and expect them to be sharp as a tack 12 hours from hell on earth?" That wasn't verbatim, but I think it illustrated the point very well.
