Back in 79 when I was at school they chucked some old books out and I picked one up, one of the things in this book was the same as your method but using a square instead of a compass, a few years after that on a building site a brick layer had cut out a circle of wood for a template but not marked the centre to attach his line to, I showed him how to find the centre and he was amazed, it was for a circular window aperture .
