Looking for a Chery for sale in South Africa? We have over 200 to choose from:

Following the success of the Chinese brand Haval in South Africa, Chery have enthusiastically entered our market with two offerings.

The first, the Tiggo 4 Pro, which we reviewed here, has been on sale for a few months now and seems to be selling well. The second is this, the Tiggo 8 Pro, a 7-seat SUV with attractive styling and a particularly appealing interior.

The Tiggo 8 Pro enters a crowded market where cars such as the Haval H6, Mazda CX-5, Toyota Rav4 and Hyundai Tucson all enjoy strong sales numbers. But with a remarkably low price and strong warranty, is the new offering from the Chinese newcomer enough to woo local buyers?

In this review, our race-ace Ashley Oldfield steps in for Ciro De Siena and tries to answer all your questions about the new Chery Tiggo 8 Pro.

Test drove this yesterday. Incredible value for money. Now Chery and Haval just need to make a Polo et al. competitor for under 200k

So, I took delivery of my Chery Tiggo 8 Pro this week, after having driven both the Haval H6, and the Chery. So, what influenced my decision you may well ask?
Firstly, you need to determine which vehicle suits your driving style and needs. As an older guy, I have no need to put my foot flat to eek out every kilowat between point A and B, or robot to robot. A leisurely drive at the speed limit does me fine thank you, and the Chery just does it better.
The 145 kw is ample, the 7 speed dual clutch is silky smooth, and having only done 600km with an everage of 9.0l/100km, I expect I'll get this down to 8.2l once the engine is run in... Not bad for a genuine 7 seater.
It's the little things that make a difference, such as what materials are used where, and the Tiggo Pro certainly trumps the Haval in this arena.
Both vehicles offer great value for money, but at the end of the day, choose the one that puts the biggest smile on your face.
I chose plush tan leather, a driver's seat that moves fully back automatically when you switch the car off to allow you to exit more easily, and returns automatically to your preset position when you start up again.
I chose the car that responds first time when you tell it to open/ close the sunroof, or any of the 4 windows. Or to set the temperature at an exact temperature on either your side, or the passenger side.
All this by uttering 2 magic words to get the magic started..., " Hello Chery".
As UB40 correctly sing, this is my Chery O Cherry O

Yesterday I test drove both the Haval H6 and this Chery. These are my take aways.

The Haval H6 is much more refined. It has a better engine and gearbox combination. It is much much faster and quieter. The suspension is also a lot better being quieter and smoother over bumps. It also felt more stable.

The Chery on the other hand feels a bit more expensive from an interior perspective. It has slightly better material quality. For example, the A pillars by the windscreen is covered in fabric inside whereas the Haval is plastic there. Small thing I know but most premium cars are covered in fabric there. The boot also has carpet on the sides and not just the floor whereas most other cars in this segment has plastic. So it looks and feels more expensive. Under the bonnet, the Chery is also fully covered with a plastic cover like Lexus and Porsche does on their cars. There's little flaps you can open to then see the dipstick, battery etc. The bonnet is even held up with 2 gas struts like bmw and Mercedes. The Haval on the other hand has no engine covers and you need to prop it open with the metal bar like cheaper cars. The Chery also has sweeping turn signals like an Audi.

It is a tough choice. Looks are subjective but I think the Haval looks classy whereas the Chery looks sporty. They both look great. For me though, it comes down to the things that make the drive good like the engine, gearbox and suspension. That's more important so I'd go for the Haval H6. I won't even compare features since they're basically identical in that respect.

I bought this last month and it’s fantastic…it was between this or the H6… the comfortable (7) seats, some extras and looks made my mind up. The things the reviewers complain about I don’t find a problem, ride and drive train is great. I like the Rear view mirror, it works nicely. I am getting 8.4l /100km. Highway I get 7.

Was a passenger in this car for a good two days and its very comfortable vehicle. I like the camera when you indicate to switch lanes or turn as it shows what's beside you.

For comparison, the base VW Tiguan Allspace 1.4TSI 110kW Life has 110Kw and 250Nm compared to the base Chery Tiggo's 145Kw and 290Nm. The Tiguan goes for R 671 700 compared to Chery's R 496 900 with some standard features which the Allspace doesn't have. If you want the more powerful Allspace with 132kw and 320Nm, you will need to cough up a rediculous R 726 000 without some options that come standard with the Chery. I could've bought my wife her own Polo Vivo with that additional R230k.

I’m purchasing one of these. They now have full black interior and as of December come standard with a 7 year 100 000 service and pan.

Who keeps their cars for 10 years?
Bought my polo brand new in 2006 and still my daily drive. 🕺

Don't know if he needs to hear this but I find the host endearing and chilled. It's a nice slow pace when he talks, which is different than most videos which are trying to grab your attention with gimicky fast edits.

This wide-angle rear-view mirror is designed to allow the driver to see the children or the elderly in the back seat at any time. You know, in China, Chery makes cars for the whole family. That's their idea. The initial acceleration is not so fast, but also to take care of the feelings of the elderly and children, so as not to be very uncomfortable

Great car, can’t complain about ride comfort at all, no rough shocks over bumps and humps.
The mirror actually gives great visibility right through the car cant understand the nausea but then watching YouTube at speed 1.5 makes ME nauseas so yeah…
Achieved 500KM (80 %city driving on the 51Lt tank, u then then fill up 42ltres from reserve to full
Ride quality gets more supple over time (at least with mine) especially with the tires at the right pressure.
What boggles me a bit is that all the vehicles in this price segment cannot on paper match the KW or NM this vehicle offers yet its numbers are criticized, even the Tiguan at this price is substantially less grunt per buck, it is by no means sluggish at all off the line and over taking and I have a 228KW 400NM sedan to compare.
Had 9 people in the car at some point on a short off roadish scenario and it handled just fine, approach angle very good too.
Infotainment Computer processes everything with a stride
Only quirks for me:
The indicator is a bit too loud, can hear from outside the very well insulated cabin
Wired Android Auto(what a faff, its 2022) and
The cluster doesn't have different themes though the options is there (system updates?)

So VW and Toyota need to watch out? I see a lot of these cars( haval, cherry) . I guess South African drivers are getting disillusioned with the relatively expensive VW’s and Toyota’s . ..

I absolutely love love love that mirror. Big plus, is that objects in the side mirrors appear to be the same size as the rear view mirror.
Get used to it and when you get back into a car with an ox-wagon mirror you really miss it.
The Ox-Wagon in this case being my Range Rover Sport.
