A patient of mine at a public hospital in New Zealand won a big ( not huge ) lottery prize. Someone from the lottery commission came to give him advice. He bought his govt house he had been renting, also two similar houses nearby for his daughters. He also wanted a car and tinny boat with an outboard motor so he could go fishing. He took his kids and grand children for a holiday back to the pacific island where he grew up. What was left was invested, they stayed in the neighbourhood and didn’t go crazy, couldn’t have happen to a nicer family.

I once briefly knew a bloke that won about £2.5 million. He still went to work everyday and lived a normal life. He told me it's not what you think its going to be like. Admittedly, he says, it takes pressure away from paying bills, but only if you don't go silly. The worst part for him was losing some friends and family over it when they came begging. The look of disgust they gave him when he gave them money, as if to say "is that it", sort of finished it for him. No idea what he's up to nowadays though.

Also, there should be a federal law throughout the United States where if a person win a lottery, there winning and I.D. should not be made public.

The best way to spend your lottery winnings is to pretend you never won them.

I remember in the 80's in Montreal a couple won 2 million in the lottery. They both worked for Bell Canada at the time and ended up throwing a huge party for all their coworkers and friends. Halfway through the party they told everyone to look under their chairs where there were envelopes with between 1, 000 and 5.000 dollars. They told everyone you have your gifts now don't ask for anymore. They quit their jobs and moved. 👍

I have always lived a frugal lifestyle ... the most I ever earned in a year was 31k, and I supported a home, a couple cars, and frankly needed nothing, and had a lot more than I probably should have. When I turned 67 I decided to retire ... between SS and a small pension ... I make only about 25k, but as I own everything buy my house (low payments) I have bought toys and more toys, and actually have more money than I really know what to do with ... I credit to making wise decisions when I worked, and living frugally ... all my life.

My mother won 100K in the Illinois Lottery back in the late the ticket at a JEWEL grocery store in Berwyn; she then bought a multi-family rental property in Oak Park IL in 1980 with the money; when she died in 2011 her estate held 27 rental properties, which we have since then sold at incredible profit. (even after paying the confiscatory taxes in Cook County and the State of Illinois) My mother never bought another ticket after winning that 100k. She always felt that was the luckiest she'd ever be again as the lottery was concerned, so she made the most of it.

Couldn't imagine losing millions like that. Don't tell (so called) friends and family.

I could imagine it's pretty hard to hold on to that much money. Because, the second you get it, EVERYONE around you is trying to take it from you.

I won the lottery for quite a huge amount I kept my winnings quiet and never was flashy. I started a school for youths aging out of foster care. And I am making my winnings work for me. I now am wealthy beyond my belief
