In this indie horror game devlog, full time game dev Two Star Games (Gavin Eisenbeisz) shows how to make a video game that is incredibly scary, horrifying, cursed, and is probably the scariest game ever. Today I'm adding new guns and weapons to my game Choo Choo Charles which is on Steam. You'll get to see Choo-Choo Charles gameplay. Some people compare these dev-logs to Dani, the Karlson, Muck, and Crab Game developer (quite flattering) Some people also compare my game to Poppy Playtime, Fnaf, Benday and the Ink Machine, but do those games have epik amazing guns and stuff? I think not.

Suggestion: You know how demons in Doom eternal get progressively more damaged while they get shot (eg. Loosing flesh/legs/mass gore effect)?What If the same thing happens to Charles?Maybe his face gets more and more bloody or creepier the closer to defeat he is, making it easier for the player to know how much damage they did without using a health bar

It would be really cool if charles had a feature where if you didn't see him, he'd slowely sneak up on you, but as soon as you were aware of him being in the area, he'd sprint at you hella fast. Also cool, time to delete and reinstall opera gx

The "Dragon's Breath" Flamethrower - "This was originally developed for clearing out overgrowth and insect infestations on tracks. You sincerely hope this can handle a pest of Charles' size and tenacity."

The "Rail Ranger" Mounted Sniper Rifle - "When train robbers started realizing that the standard machine gun would shred them up close and started attacking from longer distances, the rail companies inevitably invented a way to start shooting back in kind."

The "Answer" Rocket Launcher - "First there were horses. Then there were cars. Suggestion: Add caves where you may be able to find skeletons killed by Charles. Maybe the skeletons would have money you could take too.

What you could do is give each weapon a mechanic against Charles
For example: The flamethrower will draw Charles away, making him back up or run entirely.
The rpg could have very limited ammo, but will make Charles stop for a second while chasing you
The basic gun has infinite ammo, but is weak
And the sniper class(range gun)does ok damage-high damage depending on how far away he is, and it can shoot far
I feel that this will give a reason to switch from each gun regularly

Idea: Charles can set up little web tripwires around the map that when triggered, immediately alert him to the source of the disturbance. These can be on train tracks or on trees in the forest and once tripped, Charles will make a sound that is a mix of a train whistle and demonic screaming, and begin moving to that location. You can use the volume of the scream to determine how far away he is from you. You can also upgrade your map to show Charles' exact position every 5-10 seconds, but only after you trip a web.

I think it adds a lot to the horror aspect of the game. Just imagine, you're walking through the forest looking for parts when suddenly you trip a web, you hear the train whistle/screaming, and to your dismay it sounds relatively loud. The realization that a giant spider train is on it's way to kill you hits, and you don't have the upgraded map so for all you know he could be here in 10 seconds.

What if Charles had a sort of metamorphosis where the longer you take to kill it, the bigger and stronger he gets; maybe by eating the NPC's as time goes on? Will Charles' home be a place on the map? Like a huge burrow like a funnel spider or in the forest trees catching unsuspecting prey? Does it lay mini Charlies that will make your journey harder? Out of the hills and treelines you see his spawn come after you like a flood. Put that flamethrower to good use.

So many questions, I can't wait to play!

Hey Two Star, I have an idea. Whenever you shoot Charles with a heavy damage weapon, you should add an animation where Charles shows that he’s in pain by staggering for a second and then he continues to attack. That would be really cool!

Suggestion, i think you should make the player feel as powerless as possible when they arent on their train. Make them fear leaving it, add some taller trees that provide darker areas in some parts. Along with some scary effects

Idea for the game: Make it so once you hit Charles enough times, he leaves behind pieces of himself that you can collect later and make better weapons/armor for your train with.

I think a cool idea could be that the more you engage Charles and hurt him the more aggressive Charles becomes, so early game you barely see him mid game he can find you pretty quickly and will start looking for you if he doesn’t see you, late game he’s almost constantly chasing you giving you no chance to rest

A suggestion: Charles legs could be broken after enough damage to them and he runs off just a way to make him back off and he can regrow them later or something of that caliber
