NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) have announced the crew for the Artemis II mission, the first crewed mission in NASA's plan to establish a long-term presence on the Moon for exploration and science under the Artemis program. The four astronauts selected are Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist 1 Christina Hammock Koch, and Mission Specialist 2 Jeremy Hansen.
During the announcement event, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized the importance of the Artemis program and the significance of this crew. The Artemis II crew will work together to execute a series of demonstrations during their approximately 10-day flight test. The mission will launch on the agency's Space Launch System rocket, prove the Orion spacecraft's life-support systems, and validate the techniques and capabilities needed for humans to live and work in deep space.
The Artemis program aims to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon, with plans to send the first woman and first person of color to the Moon. The Artemis II mission builds upon the success of the uncrewed Artemis I mission completed in December 2021 and sets the stage for long-term human exploration missions to the Moon and eventually Mars.
NASA Director Vanessa Wyche said that this mission paves the way for the expansion of human deep space exploration and presents new opportunities for scientific discoveries, commercial, industry, and academic partnerships.
The Artemis II crew members were chosen for their individual strengths and experience. Wiseman, who served previously as a flight engineer aboard the International Space Station, will serve as commander. Glover, who contributed to scientific investigations, technology demonstrations, and participated in four spacewalks during his previous mission, will serve as pilot. Koch, who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman and participated in the first all-female spacewalks, will serve as mission specialist 1. Finally, representing Canada, Hansen will make his first flight to space and serve as mission specialist 2.
The Artemis II mission will be challenging, and the crew members are expected to face various trials, but Director of Flight Operations Norm Knight expressed confidence in their skills and determination to work together as a team to overcome any obstacles.
