What is PANDAS / PANS / Basal Ganglia Encephalitis?

PANDAS / PANS are neuroimmune disorders where the immune system attacks part of the brain called the basal ganglia, leading to serious neurological and psychiatric symptoms, which can arise suddenly. These symptoms can include severe OCD, sleep disturbances, rage attacks, personality changes, oppositional defiance, sensory processing issues, loss of coordination, severe and complex tics, urinary symptoms, dilated pupils, food restrictions, leading to anorexia or Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, meltdowns, a sudden onset of Autism- like traits, hyperactivity, memory decline, decline in handwriting and maths ability, ADHD traits, brain fog, psychosis and more. Everyone has a different variety of symptoms, and they can change with each flare. People with PANDAS / PANS are often misdiagnosed as having conditions such as Tourette Syndrome, Autism, classic OCD, 'behavioural problems', sensory processing disorder, anxiety, anorexia, bipolar disorder, BPD, schizophrenia or ADHD.

Have you had an OATS test? Or taken a pic of your tonsils? diet restriction can stop inflammation but it can also limit nutrients. Also, think about seeing a chiro - the fact that this and dental aids work suggests that this is about pressure on the basal ganglia and vegus nerve. good luck - you have the intelligence to help yourself and so many others. well done!
