Gov. Weld, similar to current Mass. Gov. Charlie Baker, is a liberal Republican, a vestige of the old New England Establishment of the GOP that goes back to its post-civil war roots. For decades, the Republicans maintained a flourishing liberal wing based in New England, which included several prominent politicians and presidential candidates such as Tom Dewey, Nelson Rockefeller, Ike Eisenhower, Prescott Bush, and Henry Cabot Lodge. To say that those days are dead and gone would be an understatement. Goldwater started the party on its rightward march, and it has not slowed down since. Bill Weld is the call to moderation that the GOP desperately needs. It's a shame most of them will not heed it.
