1- SSD based drive 256 GIG+
2- good keyboard
3- screen best res: 2560 x 1440, IPS > LED
4- RAM min 16 GIG+
5- mobility: thin, size not too big

A couple of recommendations: be careful getting a 4k laptop if you are running Linux because no all the apps scale properly, it can require a lot of fiddling so you can get all the fonts right. Windows and Mac are fine with 4k. MacBooks have way more battery life than a heigh end intel. If you will be away from power it could matter. (I have a windows laptop an$ battery life is 2.5 hour.

Im a webdev and at work we use macbook air.. and its compulsary. Frankly, I feel a lot more efficient on a windows.. but I'm better with mac than when I started.. but it still just feel mostly more awkward and less flexible.. 10/10 for style though.. Maybe its just what I'm used to.. but I'd swap google and apple for microsoft anyday.. when it comes to just getting work done. Maybe an apple is better designed hardware though.. I notice there isn't much of an air outlet.. or big fan present.. and despite being powerful, it never gets hot.

I cannot recommend the MacBook Air M1/M2 enough I started with the M1 and now I work on M2. Best investissement if you ask me. When you got a very good and portable machine you finish motivated and coding all the time. macOS is Unix based so its very similar to Linux with Iterm2 and zsh the terminal is amazing.

Just scored a thinkpad t495 refurbished for 300 euro, with 2 years of guarantee 😊 I’m very happy considering my budget . My monitor is a iiyama 27 inch red eagle . In spring I hope to have a framework laptop as well

I built a jacked out tower. 64ram, lots of Teras of ssds, jacked processor, graphic card. I found with full stack dev, with vms, docker containers, graphics programs, vs code, visual studio, language editors, 2 monitors, backup drives, that I need extra juice. Especially now that am doing video editing on top of it. Plus I like to do a local cluster of vms to mimic my deployment environment. I push my box hard. Wasn’t that expensive either. Definitely overkill if I was only doing coding.

I bought a budget lenovo laptop 2 years ago with aluminium case, ryzen 3 3400u, 8gb ddr4 (this is the weakness), 256 ssd (512 would be better but for this price point i couldn't get more with other features), IPS screen, keyboard with backlight and strong battery. It still works like a charm and does the job, but what i'd go for now would be at least 16gb of ram and 512gb ssd.

As a Wwindows user running Docker, I would strongly reccomend everyone to get a mac so you don´t hvae to mess around with WSL!

I was issued a new MacBook Air and was a little skeptical that it could handle my needs. It's actually better than my maxed out MacBook Pro from 2018 and has amazing battery life.

I coded with 32gb ssd with 2gb ram dual core to learn and do small project for years.

I have a Surface Laptop Studio 2 and it rocks for coding. 32GB and the RTX4050 will give all the power that you need. Battery life has been great too (about 7-8 hours), it's not a MacBook level battery life, but also, I am never far from a power outlet. Strongly recommend this laptop for those who prefer Windows.

Hi Stef, just subscribed :). Bought your book back in 2018, proved a great start. I've had not-affectionately called "The Beast" since 2017. Asus G701VI-XS72K Rog G701VI 17.3" laptop, i7-7820K processor. I regret the buy big time. Super happy to have 17.3", needed sufficient guts (barely) to render video, thunderbolt (at the time a selling feature). Absolute garbage keyboard & touchpad & waaaay too heavy. Not upgradeable to Windows 11 (which I couldn't have known then). It's a big decision... good to hear you highlight weight alongside other important factors: SSD, RAM.

Can't go wrong with a Macbook, Lenovo or Framework laptop. Personally I would get a Framework Laptop 16 with an AMD 7000 series APU. It's fully upgradeable too. RAM, NVME and even the screen too.
