HOT CAMERA MOVES In The Expanse - Part 9

We look at two scenes from The Expanse that both use a problematic blocking technique. Here, the director gets away with it, at least two out of three times. But you’d learn the wrong lesson if you tried to copy it.

I particularly like this video in the series because it discusses the efficiency of the setups and how it impacts editing. It's not difficult to dream up interesting shots but it's a big challenge to make everything cut together nicely and it is super wasteful if the attractive shots you want require lots of setups that tax the crew and take the wind out of the actors.

I missed this episode last month but an excellent breakdown of problems adjusting a scene to get into that lovely ending. I see a lot of drama directors shooting omni-angles to cover every possible POV and then editors hopping all over the line to match performances - many BBC shows do this horribly but The Expanse seems so tightly staged that the first bar scene seems like an odd exception to their usual style. Thanks again, Per.

I love this series you are doing! I am going to go back and rewatch them all again with my notebook and take notes so I can expand my database of great camera work...I did that with your other courses as well...thank you for all that you do!

With the first example, do you think they split it into two blocks/parts so only running the scene until the line cross, then only running it after the line cross?
