Just a suggestion for folks worried about ruining the temper on your tools with an electric grinder: if you touch your fingers to the back of the blade near the edge and it's too hot to be comfortable, dip it in some water to cool it off. Even better, make a habit of making one or two passes with the grinder, then cooling the blade. Don't push hard into the grinder, let the stone, (or belt, ) do the heavy lifting, and as long as you don't get any discoloration, you haven't damaged your tool.

They can be found for very cheap at yard sales. I got a very decent one like the one in the video for 5 dollars

I bought one that I see on a hippy market as soon as I checked it, it cost me 10 euros and I still use it today, best money ever spent ✌🏽💛

Like a few others here, I acquired mine from a scrapyard. Not sure of the branding as the labels had come off but it looks like it's from the 1960's. Cleaned it up and it runs far more smoothly than modern ones you buy for 5 or more times the cost I got this one for. 😀

I do recommend a variable speed grinder if you can get one. It’s nice to be able to slow it down to A. Take off less material and B. You’re less likely to destroy the temper of cutting edges. And if you need full speed for fast material removal you can crank the speed up.

I recommend getting a used bench grinder, an older one is better but what ever you can find is good.

Always preferred a linisher myself with aluminum oxide belts. But I had a conventional bench grinder too - nothing in a workshop needs to be mutually exclusive. The real secret was to be sharpening all the time as I worked, not just when I got around to it.
My father taught me that. Sharpen and work. Work and sharpen.
Past tense because of profound osteo-arthritis, but still able to look at work of which I'm proud.

A tool rest with an angled groove to sharpen drill bits is also nice.

One thing you do want to watch out for is the really small inexpensive ones tend to have motors that just aren't up to the task. I bought a tiny little 6" Delta many many years ago and the thing is so underpowered that just trying to wirebrush some rust off the head of a carriage bolt is enough to stall the motor. Spend a little extra and get a motor bigger than 1/5 or 1/4 hp. :D

I love your videos! Very professional, and informative

The content that's woefully lacking for bench grinders is how to balance them without a full machine shop and a $200 balancing rig. And how to properly tighten the wheels again once you do. I have a couple but don't use them because they vibrate so much they shake all my other tools onto the floor.

hi Rex, would you consider making a video about tuning up a cheapo grinder? An on-brand hack for making a decent toolrest instead of the crappy stock ones, balancing the wheels, etc?

My first bench grinder was hand cranked and I miss it so much

I got a cheap slow speed grinder and just finished mounting it on a wood base with sharpening jigs like in this video. I haven’t tried it out yet, though. I’m sure my bowl gouge will look much more symmetrical once I do try it out.

I wish they were about 1/5th the footprint. And they don't need to carry two tools, one with quick change would be a better fit, i feel.

I paid $20 for mine replaced the wheels and removed the toolrest from the wire wheel side. 👍🏻

My grinder came from the scrapyard. It is from the 1930s and is a Craftsman. Restoring it was not too difficult. Works much better than Chinese ones.

Everyone needs a bench grinder with a wire wheel and a grinding wheel it's more useful than you realize if you don't have one
