In this video we discuss Pantera, the Roman Soldier who may be the real biological father of Jesus of Nazareth. Professor James Tabor breaks down all the sources we have that suggest this.

It is more likely that Mary was acquainted with a young Jewish man about her own age who had enlisted in the Roman army. Because of that enlistment, Mary's parents would not have let her marry him. When Mary turned up in a family way, society naturally assumed the worst. Mary's parents immediately pawned her off to a widowed carpenter named Joseph. That is why Mary became engaged to a much older man.
Prof. Tabor has pointed out that Jesus made a mysterious visit to the region of Tyre seeking solitude and rest. There Jesus went into a house and did not want anyone to know that he was there. Very strange. How can Jesus, in a foreign city, invite himself into a someone's home? Prof. Tabor has also mentioned the gravestone of a Roman soldier from Sidon whose name was Tiberius Julius Abdes Pantera. "Abdes" may be a Latin form of "Ebed" which is a Jewish name. Was this Roman soldier Mary's long lost Jewish aquaintance who lived in Sidon? Did Jesus visit and even live in the household of Abdes Pantera? That would explain how Jesus could just walk into a home in Sidon without being invited for the purpose of getting some rest, and it would also explain why the Gospel writers did not want to talk about the many lost years of Jesus' life.
I think that the name that Jesus was known by in the first century was Yeshu ben Pantera as is recorded in the Talmud.

I could listen to Dr Tabor all day, he's so knowledgeable on biblical matters. I've just started reading his books which are real page turners.

This is why Life of Brian upset the Church. Mary was quite young. Near where Jesus was born there had been a Roman attack involving rape of many girls. She was pregnant and unmarriageable so she was placed into care of a much older man who later took her as another wife, The Church had not long discovered this, so Brian being the son of a Roman soldier was very close to this story.

This reminds me -- there is a very charming series of videos from Russia called "Luna Pantera" about a beautiful black leopard who lives with a family consisting of her two human adoptive parents and Venya, her Rottweiler canine "sister". Luna the panther was born in a zoo to a mother who refused to nurse her, and so from a very early age she had to be hand- nursed by her caring humans and raised in their home with Venya.

A terrific interview. Dr. Tabor is a biblical scholar par excellence. I have several of his books and watched many of his videos. He is probably one of the most knowledgeable individuals on the topic.

I wish Gnostic Informant could learn to shut up. It's like listening to Howard Stern when he gets excited about some point the guest makes and he jumps in with some random thought and it breaks up the flow of what the guest is saying.

If you do genealogical research, you will know that just because your ancestor has the same name as someone else, that person is more than likely not your ancestor, although they could both be living during the same time period. Just finding an ossiuary with the name Jesus or Joseph does not mean these are the remains of the Bible characters. I think the whole Pantera issue was the Jews poking fun at Christianity.

Great subject. Also am a big fan of heavy metal band Pantera, namesake of Jesus's dad.

18:13 '...steals divine name hides it in his thigh...' Makes me wonder if that reference connects to (or is confirmed by) Revelation 19:16 "He has a name written on his cloak and on his thigh, “King of kings and Lord of lords.” Thoughts from Dr. Tabor?

The Bible makes it clear that a human descendant of David, not God, was the father of Jesus. The terms, "seed", "flesh", "root", "fruit of his loins", and "offspring" mean that Jesus was the biological son of Joseph.

Matthew 1:1
"This is the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David."

John 42
"They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

Acts 2:30
"Therefore being a prophet [David], and knowing that God had sworn an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne."

Hebrews 2:16
"For verily he [Jesus] took not on him the nature of angels, but he took on him the seed of Abraham."

Acts 13:23
"Of David's seed hath God, according to his promise, raised unto Israel a saviour, Jesus."

Romans 1:3
"Concerning his son Jesus Christ, who was made of the seed of David according to the flesh."

2 Timothy 2:8
"Remember that Jesus Christ is the seed of David."

Revelation 22:16
"I, Jesus have sent my angel to testify unto you these things in the churches; I am the root (progeny) and the offspring of David."

John 1:45
“We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote; Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Matthew 9:27
"When Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, thou son of David, have mercy on us."

I bet this Pantera guy was a womanizer who got several girls pregnant and, to get far away from the mess, he joined the army. He was known in the area due to his "extracurricular activities" so, at some point, he was inserted into the stories about a pregnant virgin. This speculation is compatible with both, historicity and mythicism.

I believe that Yeshu Ben Pandira and Yeshi Ben Stada, both lived outside of Jesus time. Pandira lived in 80bce. Rabbi Gil Student has a website that explains when both Yeshus lived, and what we know about them, that let's us know that they aren't the christ Jesus.

From Wikipedia, seems relevant.

A Panther (legendary creature) is a creature in ancient legend that resembles a big cat with a multicolored hide.

According to medieval beliefs, after feasting, the panther will sleep in a cave for a total of three days. After this period ends, the panther roars, in the process emitting a sweet smelling odor. This odor draws in any creatures who smell it (the dragon being the only creature immune); they are eaten by the panther, and the cycle begins again.

The ancient Greeks believed the panther was one of the favored mounts of the god Dionysus.

Other names for this creature are pantera, pantere, and love cervere.

@ 58:52
It was costum for manumited slaves to take the familyname of their former owners and thus kept a patron-client relation.
but Abd-Es Pantara was more likely an auxilary, a non-Roman soldier who when getting Roman civilianship enter that patron-client relation by taken the family name of his patron Tiberius Julius

btw Abd-Es can be interpretated as servant of ( Abd) Eshmun (Es), Eshmun is the tutelary god of Sidon in the sense of follower of that god or maybe a kind of priest.
Priesthood and militairy function did not exclude each other in Rome. Julius Ceasar himself was the high priest or pontifex maximus while spending more time at the battlefield then in a temple.
