I had a job where when I was let go suddenly produced "write ups" that were legit never given to me. didn't even have my signature acknowledging I had received it. this was also the same job where the boss claimed that walking by me and saying "slow and steady" was a verbal warning. fun times

My daughter worked retail; if you called off sick 3 times in any six month period, you got a write up. She called off sick in early December, again in March, and again in mid July. Her manager wrote her up; he flatly refused to believe that December and July are more than six months apart. (Seriously - it wasn't a disagreement about when she called off, it was a disagreement about the number of months elapsed between say December 7 and July 15.) My daughter refused to sign it because it was factually incorrect. He threatened to fire her. She suggested he talk to HR first. He said "well maybe I will!" and stormed off. She never heard another word about it.

Refused to sign write up, then threatened with another write up for refusing to sign the first write up. I asked if they were stupid enough to believe I would sign the second write up, if I didn’t sign the first. Walked back to the shop, and never heard anything else about it.

I signed and made sure to include extra words of discontent.
If I provide proof that the road isn't passable I shouldn't be punished for being late to work (road literally cracked and was gushing water, couldn't drive that way)
Signed, "under confusion due to proof being sent to the supervisor of why I was going to be late, called and sent proof as soon as situation was apparent."
Then I took a photo of the version I signed.
Document everything aways~

I refuse to sign write ups because many of them are bogus. I have had instances where my signature has been placed on other paperwork. Even worse yet, my bosses altered the paperwork to say something else after I signed it. I have had my personnel file altered after these actions are taken. Even when you rebut the write up with evidence, you get laid off anyway. It is a lose lose proposition with your boss.

If I am in that situation I just write on the paper next to my signature "signed under duress and threat of further disciplinary actions via my supervisor".

I liked to cross off incorrect parts of the write-up and add corrections, initialed and dated. Also helps to add a few ink smudges around the margins to make it harder for them to cut and paste the signature section without being obvious.

After every meeting with HR I usually send an email after... then I started getting "verbal warnings" for wasting their time with those emails.
When I had pay issues I made sure to also add my personal email. Again got a warning saying my personal email isn't secure and im violating their policy.
But my work emails get deleted after 3 months regardless if I need something saved

Added bonus tip: If you are in a union and your are being disciplined via write up or termination, you do not have to engage with your managers. You can invoke your “Weingarten Rights” and have a union steward represent you in your case.

I once had a situation where refusing to sign initially helped. It was a performance review that rated me as "needs improvement" and listed the deficiency as "fails to follow manager direction." I directly said that I'm uncomfortable signing with a deficiency that is so completely unmeasurable and could mean any reason. HR was involved and I presume saw the risk to the employer as they agreed with my position.

I did this knowing that the reason was not something my manager would want to put into writing: that I wasn't working overtime. It would be unpaid as I was salaried and exempt but he had agreed that my work was performed well and on time so it was going to be difficult to justify a need for me to work OT.

Our annual reviews and write ups actually have a rebuttal section where you sign. Thank God for the union.

I had an assistant principal who had told me first thing in the job interview that he didn't like me because I would just quit when I got pregnant. A year later I was pregnant and due to Rh factor problems Imy abdomen had swelled beyond what would be normal. I requested an overhead projector that would allow me to be seated as I presented the lesson and frequently walk the room to guide instruction. This was gladly done for another teacher previously. Long story short, I was in my 9th month, he did an evaluation and of course made it sound as bad as possible. During our post eval meeting I demanded that he include that I was in my ninth month of pregnancy and just days to my due date which he then had to include. He seemed shocked that I stood up for myself.

I got a write up with false write ups on it, for things a delivery driver just can’t do, whilst also working. Like sleeping on the job. So I refused to sign it. My department manager was then asked to sign, and she refused as well.

Thanks . That's very informative . I'm that person who always thought signing the write-up was like admitting the reason for it was legit .

This is why unions are important especially in situations like this

My instant reaction would be to get a lawyer to write up a bill to give to the company and tell them “This is how much your action will cost you.”

When we were confronted with this tactic they would tell us its a five day suspension if you refuse to sign it. To combat this we would sign the paperwork to avoid the suspension for insubordination but always put "signed under protest " . This leaves the disciplinary action open to a grievance later. Management would throw a fit saying that they would only accept a "clean copy" but couldn't do anything about it as long as it was received and signed they got nothing. Without a shop steward in the office with you to point this out our people would fall for this trick all the time. Having to deal with dirty Management will make you strong and teach you much

When my manager and HR tried to put me on a plan, I asked what part of the conduct policy I had violated, and they were unable to point to anything. I suggested they may be discriminating against my neurodivergent traits. They were. I won my EEOC case. 😁

I remember at the Dollar General, the DM didn't like me so she had me written up for using a slur that i NEVER said. I would've fought it but my manager took her side in the situation. I hate corporations
