The more I think about it, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is basically Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

- Side character introduced in the second instalment of the main series is the protagonist
- Beats a giant opponent with relative ease
- Loses to an unassuming Brazilian (yes, Death's voice actor is from Brazil)
- Befriends a talking canine
- Battles with his past and it's conflict with his newfound perspective
- Memes, the DNA of the soul
- Rematches with said Brazilian, their conflict ends with them gaining newfound respect for each other
- Minor character in a suit comes out of nowhere to become the main antagonist

Yes I saw this on Twitter. The only way it would've been better is if one of the antagonists wanted to take us back to the good old days after 9/11.

I feel like Puss’ battle style alone depicts development in this scene. He’s concentrated, parrying a lot more, using both hands when taking up a stance with his sword, treating it like a proper duel and in turn showing, Death, respect. When he gets the upper hand he’s not show boating but reinforcing what he’s fighting for, thus he’s comfortable to quip about showing off the gatito blade and ending the battle off with his signature spin attack. This is the new way of life that Puss found on that journey of self discovery and he’ll never stop fighting for it.

Since all of the movie clips are child-restricted, I just wanted to point out a detail I adore.

When Puss loses his sword, he makes do with a stick. Later, after he's formed a friendship with Perrito and Kitty, he earns the Gatito blade from Softpaws.

When he uses it to deflect Lobo’s attack, the blade is a symbolic representation of that friendship. Despite how inevitable Death is, the yearning he has for his friends helps him overcome that fear.

It’s such a great piece of symbolism that isn’t harped on too much.
