CANNED TUNA CHUNKS
As a rule of thumb, branded canned tuna vs. supermarket tuna do differ in quality. Well the tuna chunks do taste very similar, tuna brands use very little brine (salted water) well the cheap shop versions bulk up the weight using more water.
// HOW TO DRAIN CANNED TUNA //
To demonstrate how to remove the brine, we've used a cheap supermarket (Tesco) canned tuna in our video. All you need to do is remove the can lid using an opener, and continue to press the lid into the can until the water is completely drained away - be careful not to cut your hand.
MAYONNAISE of CHOICE
You can use your favourite mayonnaise here, whether store bought or homemade - well we've gone for Hellman's Real Mayonnaise. With a thick, creamy texture it works best and we use it for all our recipes that require mayo.
SEASIONING
Bare in mind before you season, canned tuna in brine has been soaking in salted water for months, even years. So when seasoning only use grounded black pepper, as plenty of salt is still soaked into the tuna chunks.
INGREDIENTS (1 SERVING):
- 160g Canned tuna in brine, drained
- 2 tbsp Hellman's Real Mayonnaise, small scoops
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Open the canned tuna using an opener, removing the lid off completely, being careful not to cut your fingers
2) Using the lid you removed, press the lid hard into the can to drain away the water - using a bowl to catch any falling tuna
3) There's always more water, so use a fork to break up the tuna in the can, and continue to press the lid again until that extra water is gone
4) Empty whole can onto plate, using the back of a fork to break up big chunks to make it more spreadable
5) Add 2 tablespoons of Hellman's mayonnaise with a separate spoon, and use your fork to mix the mayo and tuna chunks in thoroughly - then season with a pinch of ground black pepper
TUNA MAYO RECIPE IDEAS
SANDWICH: This will make a great tuna mayonnaise sandwich. You can add a little sweet corn, green pepper or cucumber for a delightful tuna sandwich.
BAKED POTATO: Or jacket potato, when you next bake a potato in the oven, use this tuna mayo as a topping instead of the usual cheese and baked beans.
PASTA: Cook up some pasta on the hob, allow to cold, and top it using this tuna mayo mixture. Seal in a storage container with lots of salad and take to work for lunch time.
SALAD: Make this recipe healthy by substituting the full fat mayo for a healthier option, cut with Greek yogurt and than add to plate with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, red onion and beetroot.
