3:08 axes excell when used like utility weapons; used to pull, push, position, control and breakthrough armour of all types (a well made danar-axe can break through plate armour). remember it's kind of like a short staff as well, so use it as so if Need to block with it (think the 2 short stick within your martial arts weapons). you also hold close to the axe head for utility and movability until you need the leverage from the long swing (you can also use the blade as kind of a knockle blade holding it close to the head, in case you get really close and the blade protects your hand; think katar or similar techniques)

3:08 you see where the axe is, you see the tiny double axe head? year pull it the other way into the lower leg as you would with a double bladed sword backedge cut;
1 weapon vs. shield+ weapon is vastly a disadvantege and once again you need to utilize what you have;
a shield CANNOT be brute forced when used by a capable user;
but you can EASILY grab it with your right hand, you don't want to grab it with the axe as you got nothing else to block with, and pull it towards you while swinging the axe to the head; if he cuts your hand, yes you lose fingers(maybe, if you got chain on properly not) but then you hit his head with an axe and won so yer...
grabbing his shield and hammering with the longer range axe to virtal area's pretty much shuts down the shield advantage and put him on the backfoot as you can partly control his movement by pulling and moving the shield :)
