Find your art style FAST ⚡️ an exercise that *actually* works

Developing a distinctive personal art style creates new opportunities, gets your work recognized + identifiable, creates impact, builds relationships *and* can help you to make clearer decisions about where you’ll go next creatively.

The trouble is, when you start trying to figure out what that style could even look like for you, the possibilities can be paralyzing. There are so many things you like, but what parts can be your own without feeling like a copy of someone else?

In today’s vid, we’re taking 4 steps through a simple exercise where you’ll learn how to pull the exact qualities you like about different styles and then fuse them together to create something new, distinctive and truly your own. (this is also how I break creative block when I’m in a funk)

This exercise can be used with any art type (I use it for illustration, lettering and design) *and* it can be executed with anything – you can use it with a sheet of paper if that’s what you’ve got.

This has been a go-to of mine for years and now it’s yours, too ❤️

I've watched a ton of these videos about finding my style. This one is simple, straight forward, and to me, makes so much sense. I'm definitely going to try it. Thank you Teela for your unending ability to teach difficult things in a way that truly inspires me.

I’ve watched and learned online from other artists since 2014 and you are the first artist to put it simply in a very understandable way to be inspired and make it your own! Thank you!

wow... 40 yrs ago in art class we had to choose a Master work to copy as perfect as we could. Then write up what we learned from it. I choose a Dali and realized a lot of his colors don't touch.. there is a paperthin line of background color between. But never thought to try that exercise in this way. Wish I had... this is perfect way to discover what you like and why!

This is SUCH a useful video, you somehow explained to me how I taught myself to shade YEARS ago after doing one persons "how i do hair tutorial" for fun. It's baffled me for years as to how that comepletely turned around everything I had done before for light and shadow, and now you've made it make SO much sense. Becuase this is exactly the step by step i did; copy them exactly, and then copy vaguely from memory and replace things I forgot with my own things. That was the biggest turn around I ever had in my art, and I've struggled for years to try to recreate that experience of developing my art to try and overcome the major artblock I've felt since my dad died. So thank you for giving me a breakdown of exactly how I CAN intentionally do that again. Hopefully I'll get my art back thanks to you <3

Very clever 🧠. I was already doing part of this process, unconsciously, until now. Sometimes I feel like copying a drawing that I like and I learn from it : what I like, what I don't, why this shape, this shadow, alternative ways to draw something... (as artists and more specifically painters have always learned throughout History). But I was missing the part where I have to choose something very different from what I want to paint! This is awesome and definitely a huge step forward, it makes this copying process open to my own creativity and defining my own style! Thank you Teela 💌

I also love Maru Godas!! Her acrylic travel sketches are so cool! I really loved how you combined what you liked from both their styles. I love the second flower you did. Honestly this is one of the best lessons on how to develop your own style, that I have ever seen. I am becoming a big fan of your videos and your perspective on creatng art. Thank you❤❤❤

Your tutorials over the last several years has taught me SO MUCH! I've finally landed on something I consider my own original style. This video has definitely arrived at the perfect time as I continue to really focus in on what I love to draw and how i love to draw it.

Teela, I was following your content very long time ago, and I'm so glad I've recently discovered you again! This video is a gem, you gave as an exercise, something we can actually do to find a style that we like. People usually say to just draw more, which doesn't help a lot if you are stuck doing the same thing.

So good! I realized I do exactly this, not necessarily to get to my own style, but to see what I got from what I watched. Sometimes, I don't have time or have the tools with me when I watch a video, so when I get to my ipad, I just try to replicate what I learned from memory! Thanks for this powerful video!
