You would set base on level surface or created a level surface on which to set it. Then you would run a pin across the axel forks. Tieing a monofilament string to the exact center of the horizontal pin. Then tie a fishing sinker weight to the end of the monofilament string. Be sure the weight hangs below the calliper ends. Now adjust the calliper arm so that the plum line string is in the exact center of the jaws.
Or just buy the centering jig.

nice.... you can also use a triangle design ruler with zero in the middle. Place the ruler in the two arms of the park tool. Then you check if the arms are equal distant from each other... If not, adjust it... After this step, let the ruler in the both arms... For example: Open the both arms an let the number 7 to the right arm and the number 7 cm to the left arm... In the middle you have 0 cm.... Ok... In the calipers place a laser pointer.. Exactly in the middle of the calipers... Open the arm where the calipers are until the laser target the rule... The laser should target the 0 cm in the ruler... if not, adjust it.
