The pandemic accelerated a growing trend of a large number of employees quitting their jobs in search of better opportunities, better work-life balance, and more fulfilling careers. Even though the pandemic is slowly subsiding in parts of the world, the labor market continues to be tight—and the competition for top talent remains fierce.

Corporate culture rewards the biggest bullies the most and punishes the biggest honest hard workers the most. That's all you need to know and enough reason for me to be self-employed.

You did exactly what I did. I quit my office job and became a Minimalist in 2020 and worked part-time as a tour guide. My pay was cut in half but I became extremely happier!
I lost 55 pounds, became more healthier, made more friends, spent more time with family, and went outside more. I had no idea how poisonous office environments were. NEVER AGAIN!

Plus, I'm proud of all of you for quietquitting.

I have never experienced a company that was as loyal to me as I have been to them. That's just not how that works, nor even an expectation.

But what broke me was watching upper managers and CEOs, all whom make significantly more than me, constantly reward themselves with endless 6 and 7 figure bonuses, lush conferences at high end vacation resorts, but not understanding even the most basic fundamentals of the equipment or product lines that they depended on for revenue. While telling me "cash flow targets weren't being met, so they couldn't afford a basic cost of living pay so everyone needs to work harder." Even though I was still personally generating tens of millions in profits for them.

There just comes a point where you have to tell your multimillionaire boss "you can have 40 hrs or 0. Either way, we'll agree."

Side note: i was promoted to customer! Immediately picked up by a competitor. And watched my pay go up nearly 40% within a year or two. And I can't put a price on the dramatic improvement in quality of life (stress reduced by 99.9%).

"An indictment on corporate culture." Well put, Simon.

It should be "people don't want to be slaves anymore!
" Instead of "people don't want to work anymore"
Many people,
particularly the younger generation, use a range of unconventional methods of earning a living these days.
1 worked in the retail for over 10 years, so I'm quite happy that this is taking place. For too long, retail bullied me and a lot of my employees/colleagues saying things like "if you don't like it, go; another like you is waiting to get into your position " since the COVID, I found a job that helps me grow, pays me more and Values Me
Social media cleared the way for a rapidly expanding market, and it taught us a lot.
2020 was my turning point, and investment helped alot!

New generations are not willing to work in toxic environments that makes them feel they are just a number. Companies need to provide loyalty to get loyalty in return. And this is possible by making managers less pretending and more authentic with real leadership skills, teamwork spirit and growing opportunities for everyone.

As someone who was part of an employee survey group, it was put together because my companies leadership wanted to know why during the twice a year employee survey that they sent out leadership (outside of their direct manager) was getting review bombed. And after months of meetings and telling them, "Hey the #1 thing employee's want from the company is fair pay"

Leadership did two things.

1) Said, 'Yeah we know pay is the issue but is there anything else we can do.' at which point they did nothing &
2) Stopped sending out emails/talking aboout record profits the company was making each quarter.

Since the shutdown I have zero desire or plans to ever work for somebody again (a boss, corporation, ..). Self employment, passive income, rental income, trading/barter, ... If I would ever work for a company again (very unlikely) I would make sure that I would be able to quit any time I want to.

Nope my corporate experience was TOXIC! We would get threatened to get fired in EVERY Memo and any time we questioned their stupidity!! Blamed for everything and treated like we were the enemy! and we did not even get a cost of living adjustment for 12 yrs, , Well the abusive supervisors got four raises while we got shit on! Never again will I subject myself to this abuse!!! I checked out!

I think you're spot on about people realizing the unknown isn't so scary.

The world will become a better place if a lot of people are able to follow their dreams while simultaneously earning enough to sustain themselves without working like a slave! ❤

Great video. For anyone who has resigned themself to the devil they know, it doesn't have to be that way. Do not put up with people who mistreat or gaslight you. Make your move. It doesn't have to be today. It can be next month. Or next year. But make it!

I spent 35 years working in an Australian government department. Retired at the end of 2021. But I did the “quiet quitting” thing five years before that. I’d spent years noticing what I called “responsibility creep” where the number of things for which employees were responsible constantly went up, but salary stayed right where it was. So I looked at what was on my written job description, and divested myself of any responsibility that wasn’t there. Copped some flack from management about other people on my team having to pick up my slack, but told my colleagues that if I didn’t do it, there would be no precedent for them. I’m pleased to say some of them have begun to follow my example…

Number 1 reason for people resigning from their jobs is sickening bosses.

I think Simon nailed it. Usually the reasons for big changed are a result of lack of changed for sustained period of time.
Read a lot of lengthy articles making up tons of various reasons, but none of them were truly convincing.
The simple and well though justification proved to be the best yet again.

I was a research scientist at Pfizer for twenty years until 2009 when Big Pharma R&D basically shut up shop in the UK. Not just Pfizer, every large Pharma business pretty much closed shop. Pfizer laid off 5, 000 people as did the other companies. Research scientists were two a penny for years afterwards. I found a job in South Wales at Norgine but instead of being part of the team that was part of the monthly decision process about next steps and project progression I was blocked from being involved. Only senior management made the decisions and I was just told what to do. I had no agency any longer.
Yet when I stopped participating and just wanted projects that I wanted to do, I was accused of not being a team players. You can't be a team player with no agency. You are just a drone being told what to do. You can be either compliant or not, but you can't be a team player...
There have been other jobs I've done which I've left out for brevity but these are the key points I wanted to say.
Since then, we had the pandemic. I decided enough was enough of being shat on and disrespected. I quit and took early retirement.

Simon, this extends to first responders also, not just corporate culture. Police, fire, EMS, 911 dispatchers, nurses all are covered in this umbrella, also!

Cause we realize they don’t give a shit about us. We are there to be used and disposed of per corporate whim. Why should we care about them?

The Pandemic and Global Shut Down gave people the opportunity to experience the alternative Life style and to take a breather and realign what's important to each of us and particularly in view of our mortality and the relative short time we have on this mortal coil ... (or toil). The Corporate Bluff has been called and we are better for it.
