Reading all these comments screaming at how fake everything is;how the contrast is too great and everything seems fabricated (because it is)- the whole aesthetic point of the great gatsby is that it's unbelievable; anyone who's picked up the book and read a few pages should be able to see that in Fitzgerald's indulgent writing style. It's splendid, damn near dream like. Luhrman's adaptation of this captures that ethereal sense; and who gives a crap if he used green screen to accomplish it and if it shows? To create physically what Luhrman created digitally in this movie would be damn near impossible and the expenses phenomenal, especially considering the film's production was based in Australia (where no architecture of the type seen in 1920s New York exists, by the way; it would all need to be fabricated/built which in a way, makes it fake). The effects are clean, stunning to look at and all in all pulled off wonderfully. Technology lets us create an infinity of wondrous spectacles; so let there be spectacles. Let there be wonder.

This movie was stunning to watch! Everything was brought to life, from the characters to the sceneries, even the smallest props were noticeable and in perfect harmony to the magical dream-like world that was Gatsby. It still remains one of my favorite movies.

This film actually makes me really sad, even upset. We look at the people at the very top - they have everything - fast cars, enormous houses and everything they think that they want. At the end of it all, they are not happy. Everything is easy, nothing is to be pursued and nothing more can be achieved. When you have everything, it seems, you have nothing. Lana del rey's voice is chillingly similar to the deep falsity and charade that Gatsby's life is - fake smiles, endless nights of extravagance. Really is a truly saddening and depressing film. But nonetheless what a film it is.

Such a good movie. I like that they were effects. It adds the the feeling that all of it was too good to be true and it never existed. That's how I feel when I watch the movie. It's depressing but it's supposed to be

This is really crazy! I never thought about the background scenes being all green screen & illusion. I will definitely be watching this movie in a whole different light now. Like "you know those trees are fake right? Yup. Green screen. I saw a video about it." lol

if anyone has seen the TV show "almost human", i recommend it to those who are obsessed with CGI and other visual effects. They were able to use visual effects to create a futuristic city of Vancouver . With the effects they were able to add hypothetical infrastructure and buildings which one may imagine to exist far into the future. If they can use CGI to create a futuristic city out of a present one they can also use it to recreate a past 1920s new york out of the current one.

We were credited in the movie for being a historical resource to Lurhman and his crew - much of the fabric, from the pier, to the Arrow Collar ad, as well as the authentic movies and plays out in the summer of 1923 was sent to them by a series of emails at midnight New York time. We got the gig from having written a book, of all things, on the Queensboro Bridge. They asked us if we could help them create Times Sq in 1923. "If we could do Queens Plaza in 1923, we could create Times Sq." we answered. We never even talked in the phone - all it is just a series of emails. this film is just a massive visual effects masterpiece. personally i loved this film. the drama, romance, action and thrill Well done to all involved. cast and crew.
