This is what I was waiting to see, with M4 MacBook Pro out I thought to go for it, but seeing this the M3 MacBook Air isn’t bad, one thing I want to know is how is the fan noise on the m4 pro? And the heat with m3 air ? - not while pushing the system, but while running for a longer duration doing regular office tasks

Its so refreshing to see video actually showing what the base model can do, so many youtubers reviewing their absolutely maxed out M4 Pros when most people will only get the base with maybe a memory upgrade.

Thanks for this review showing real editing times! I am currently looking to get my first MacBook Pro and between the M4 Pro with 14/20 GPU, 48 ram and 2 TB OR and I’m for Max chip, 36 ram, 2 TB… I am wondering if the ram is more helpful for a video editing and an M4 pro chip is enough or more memory Van and GPU on the Max chip would be worth several extra hundred dollars for someone who hopes to keep the machine a while? ☺️🙏🏼 thank you!!

If you did them back to back the Air was probably already warm... still the Air did just fine. I'm guessing my M3 Pro would fall somewhere in between, definitely a worthwhile test, thank you for the video! My wife has a 13" M3 Air with the same config and it has been fantastic so far!

The pricing of these two models makes it a very difficult choice. My use case is perfect for the Air, but a 100$ difference makes it hard to pull the trigger. Hopefully, we see some decent deals for Black Friday.

I went through the exact same decision making process. I had the 16" MacBook Pro with the Core i7, 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. I upgraded to the 14" MacBook Pro with M4, 16 GB RAM, 1TB SSD and Nano Texture. I had the same concerns about OS updates for my old 16" MacBook. I wanted to go back to a more portable model, more battery life, MagSafe charging, and the additional ports. I will say I am so happy I made the change. I didn't need M4 Pro or M4 Max for what I do (working in Office 365 and some basic photo editing). The battery life has been such an eye opener for me. I do notice the the fans do not turn on as much on the new MacBook and does stay cooler for me. Also, I love the Nano Texture display. I've always hated gloss displays as I work from home in an office with a lot of natural light. So this does help with visibility for me. Not that I really needed validation for my choice, I am glad to see you create this video, it does make feel better about my choice!

I think the issue I have as someone who uses an MBP in higher education is that maybe 60% of students are also Mac based, but maybe under 1% of these use their MBPs for pro-video creation. Meanwhile on YT probably 95% of reviews are centered on high-end video or audio editing performance, all asking variants of a few very similar questions. There are a couple of channels that focus of ML or scientific software but they're rare, so its hard to get any real sense of the M2->M4 performance shift over the range of software an engineering, genetics or pure-science student may encounter despite the hundreds of reviews.

Given the resolution differences with the 14” m4 having more pixels than the 15” m3 air would there be more screen real estate but just smaller font.

Hey Jerry, what’s the read/write speed of the internal storage for the M4?
