The whole trick is in converting outlines to compound paths first before clipping any images

When I clicked on clipping mask, everything disappears. Is there another way?

I tried doing this using a vector squared as the clipping mask, on a jpeg I brought into illustrator -- it didnt work and says "Cant make a compound path. All objects in a compound path must be paths, and they cannot be brushed or be part of an object."

it appears you were able to compound an image file though rather than another vector -- thoughts?

Compound path>make is filling in the "cutouts" in my objects. Is there a work around? I have a group of objects and some of them have holes in them. Imagine a bunch of skulls with eyes and noses cut out. It keeps filling them in. I can't figure this out.
