The Uchiha Clan is one of the four noble clans of Konohagakure, reputed to be the village's strongest because of their Sharingan and natural battle prowess. After helping found Konoha decades ago, the Uchiha grew increasingly isolated from the village's affairs, culminating in most of their deaths during the Uchiha Clan Downfall. Few Uchiha now survive into the present day.

It's kinda sad tho... The burst of Uchiha's power is pain and grief.
The "hate curse" doesn't come directly from hate, but from the loss of a thing (manly times the ONLY thing) they loved -as Tobirama said.
Like- imagine borning already condemned to have a life full of hatred and sadness. Being sick with loneliness because you are cursed with the inability to feel love of warmness -just because some guy years ago decided to rebel against his brother and father.
The people in the village would fear the Uchiha, would forbid them to active great things and maintain them away from the control. It's not for nothing that even with many Uchiha dreaming of becoming Hokage none of them could do it- Fugaku is an example of it. It's ok to fear the opponent in a moment of war or rebellion, but I think the village was too violent dealing with the Uchiha clan.
I mean, Itachi and Izumi were bullied at school for being Uchiha; Itachi had to literally hide and stop going to public places so some crazy guy against the Uchiha clan wouldn't murder him.
And we still have the hypocrisy of "committing genocide to avoid a possible 'civil war' due to a rebellion that started because 'someone saw a Sharingan in the Nine-Tails eyes during the attack'" - and spying people inside of their houses with cameras 24/7 is also a bit problematic.
