Ornstein was the leader of the Four Knights of Gwyn. These were basically the most elite royal guards. Smough had always dreamt of gaining the title and becoming one of them, but was excluded pretty much solely because of his cannibalism. Instead, he was relegated to just being the royal executioner…

The reason that Smough is so much harsher toward Ornstein may be because he always secretly resented not being included. In the original version, Smough laughs after Ornstein dies. It’s almost as if he’s celebrating after proving that he isn’t inferior to Ornstein after all.

Worst part of this is that you see Ornstein move his hand slightly and breathe, meaning he was alive before Smough killed him.

I love how Ornstein notices you entering and enters battle mode but Smough is just there waiting like an NPC about to give you a request

I don't know all the lore other than that Smough liked to eat dudes, so I don't know anything about their personalities outside of these cut scenes, but I find it really sad that Ornstein seems to mourn over Smough's death, giving him an air of respect before gaining some power from him and wanting to avenge him.

Whereas Smough just fucking crushes Ornstein's corpse like he meant nothing and just took his power without giving Orn a second thought.
